Magpies

Turns out Eurasian magpies are the only birds that recognize themselves in the mirrors..I want to put together a lesson for my LO about magpies.  I come from Australia and it seems like here in US there aren't so many magpies as we have there in Australia. 

Just of curiosity - what associations do you all have with the bird Magpie, and how do you call this bird (Pica Pica? Forty?) Can US people differentiate a magpie from a crow? Do people love magpies?

    Thanks everyone for your input. Actually I didn't mean that as a joke or something, I was just wondering about my baby's love for the magpies. I mean, kids see things differently than we, don't they? Well I will keep checking anyway, I would love to hear some meaningful input here anyway.
