Bibs are cute but I never used them so I'm not buy any. Burp cloths are a must for me: DS1 was a huge spitter but DS2 wasn't. I use the cloth diaper ones instead of the "cute" little ones. Not as pretty but much more absorbent and useful.
PS if you want your cloths/bibs to absorb better don't use fabric softeners. The softener add oils to the cloths that lessens the amount of water/droop/spit-up they can absorb.
I also used receiving blankets as burp clothes. I was given so many that would have never been used otherwise. As far as bibs go. I hate bibs. I never used them unless I was feeding ds. even then all he wanted to do was chew on them so they didn't protect much.
Yes! DS was a super spitty baby. Burping him could easily result in waterfalls from his mouth on to the floor. We kept towels on the floor in the space we typically fed him in for this reason. So, yeah, bibs and burp cloths were helpful. Those that didn't find they needed them are lucky! I prefer the AA burpy bibs. We CD so we now have a stash of prefolds to use if we need to.
I was given a ton of bibs by BIL and SIL and have been gifted a few as well so yes to bibs. In regards to burp cloths, I don't have any of those, but I have a ton of receiving blankets that can be used for that purpose. I'm all for multiple use items!
I've got both too. DD was not a spitty baby at all, so I didn't have much need for burp cloths, but if did use bibs when feeding her and when she started drooling. We'll see what this one is like...probably the complete opposite.
Yup - but instead of burp cloths I got the basic cotton diapers (Gerber brand) as they apparently are more useful and cheaper. And I should say I haven't actually purchased any of these myself - they've all been given as gifts. But I did register for just 1 pack of the cloth diapers because I was told how helpful they are.
I registered for a few packs of Gerber flatfolds for this reason. So cheap!
I have four bibs that I have purchased, but I probably won't buy more until my shower. From what I gather, bibs and burp cloths tend to be popular shower gifts.
Something to use as a burp cloth is a must for us for the first few months. Cloth prefolds are some of the best burp cloths around because they are so absorbent. We called them "spit up diapers" when we were kids. I made some to use with this LO with terry cloth.
Bibs are pretty much just fashion accessories before they are on solids, unless you have a really spitty baby.

I got a pack of cloth diaper inserts/prefolds too to use as burp cloths. I haven't bought any bibs but I do have a couple of outfits that came with 1, I might get a few more little ones in case the baby is a drooler to keep the clothes dry. I actually only got 1 at my shower and it's a larger size so baby won't wear it for a while, I want to get a few smaller drool bibs.

Yes. My sister said the things she felt she didn't have enough of were the bibs and burp cloths. I am trying to get plenty of these and receiving blankets in case baby spits up a lot. I don't want to be stressing out cause I don't have any clean ones. I am a once a week laundry person. I may be crazy here, but I am hoping to keep that up.

Out of all the burp clothes I received only one pack was even remotely useful. The rest were too narrow to be of any help. The ones that were good my mom found at tj maxx and they were apparently a discontinued Carter's style. I actually took those too small to ever be useful receiving blankets and cut them and doubled them over to make them a bit thicker and they were great! I will be reusing those and making more if needed. As far as bibs go DD had reflux so we used them quite a bit. We also used them a lot when the drooling started.
I'm going to chime in another receiving blankets work way better for burp cloths. They cover so much more surface area, and you can usually still grab a corner to wipe baby's face - or reposition/refold the entire thing so that you can use it to finish the feed/burp session.
I never used bibs much. It bothered me that I could't see their clothes, and it bothered me that when I held a little baby in a bib the bib usually scrunched up in front of their face... then when my boys were older, they wouldn't tolerate bibs, so it was moot.
The burp cloths we received as gifts I found useful doing tummy time. I'd plop one down under babe's face, so if they spit up it wouldn't get on the actual blanket/play mat. Or in the early days, while nursing, I'd shove a burp cloth or pre fold under my armpit - teeny baby let tons of milk dribble out the side of his mouth and I'd end up soaked otherwise.
We always used receiving blankets as well (instead of burp cloths). However, the wider burp cloths actually come in really handy if you put them under baby's bum on the change table. That way if you get some poop on it, you don't have to wash the change pad cover, just replace with another burp cloth. I still use our burp cloths for changing DS and he's 19 months old.
Re: Are you getting bibs & burp cloths for the beginning?
We were given about 40 bibs and burp cloths before DD1 was even born. So, yes?

Bibs are hand me downs. Won't use them till teething/solids, but yes, we already have them.
