Tanning bed

so another beauty related question. I know there are all sortsa risks associated with tanning beds and skin cancer and so on.

I was wondering has anyone here went tanning while pregnant, if so how often, how long and what was your doctors response?

I used to go at least 1ce a month durring this time of year but since my pregnancy I've stopped tanning completely and only sun bathed about 3 times this summer to avoid and damage to my skin and not dry it out and aid in stretch marks appearing (which I also know are inevitable if your going to get them).

I'm hitting a point in my pregnancy where I really miss some of my beauty regimes and would love to hear other womans experiences.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

  • What does your doc say about it?

  • I used to tan in beds until about five years ago, but I would never do it pregnant.

  • I tanned all the time in my late teens to mid twenties - I cringe every time I think about it now. I know it's not a microwave per say but thats how I think of it and I would never do that pregnant. It's not worth it. If it's dangerous for you normally I can't imagine it's anyways dangerous pregnant. I don't know if self tanners are much better with all be chemicals soaking into your skin either. I'm getting a mani and pedi right now!
  • I would say no since I feel that with the hormones the sun could be more dangerous. I got a nastey burn on a cloudy day and I blame the hormones. I have also heard of skin cancer accelerating in pregnant women. We're almost to the end so just try to wait a few more months.
  • No. Just no.

I wear sunblock every day, and wear a sun hat when I'm outside, I STILL got more brown spots on my nose and cheeks this summer. I would never seek those out.

  • How awesome would it be if your baby came out all tan too?! You should just go do it and tell us how it goes!!

Don't take unnecessary risks because of your skewed thoughts on what beauty is. Like a previous poster said, go get a mani/pedi, massage, etc.. Why would you want to tan in the first place? Do you like the idea of being 35 and your skin looking like chewed leather?! Or what about the idea of having cancer? Totally not worth it in my eyes.

  • Uh...seriously? I'm going with hell no on this one. I can also pretty much guarantee your doc will look at you like a you're a total moron if you ask.

  • I used to spray weekly (I like to be tan but not get cancer) my doc recommended even stopping that. Your skin reacts much differently when pregnant and the chemicals aren't good for baby if you inhale them. In fact on the form to cancel membership, one of the options to select was pregnancy.

I get it, I look like Casper and it sucks. But it's just one of the many sacrifices you've got to make now that you're a mom.
  • I got sun burnt as a child with 2nd degree burns, my mom thought we were playing inside while we were in fact outside. I have scars on my shoulders that will never go away. I have never tanned nor do I have the intention to. The pain isn't worth it, my MIL has a tanning bed in her house and used it frequently. Her skin looked like leather.

Wow! Vain much! I would not ever go under a sun bed, pregnant or not. But if you want to do it, ask your Dr not us!
This. I used to go when I was in high school and I regret it now.

  • I am pretty disgusted at all the responses, makes me wonder why anyone would ask any honest question on this site. Judgemental and down right mean. There are hazards everywhere, and i personally know there are far worse things than sunbathing. Its all in perspective. To the woman that asked this, if you are comfortable tanning once or twice a week i am sure your baby will be just fine.
  • Do you understand why you aren't supposed to hot tub or sauna while pregnant? Tanning does the same thing. Too hot for baby. You have like 3 months left, just wait. Get your hair or nails done instead.
  • @leosmom25‌ my H isn't Hispanic but has really olive skin that tans as soon as he even thinks about the sun. My boys have inherited it from him. I stay super pale and stick out like a sore thumb around them lol. It use to bother me, now I really don't care. I would rather, ya know, not have skin cancer.

Sunbathing vs. a tanning bed are COMPLETELY different. Yes hazards are everywhere but why willingly put your unborn, defenseless child at risk?! Edit:iPad sucks

  • Wow 1st off I never said I was jumping in a bed as we speak, I am well aware of the dangers of both tanning and other forms of over heating you body and core temp. I was just asking for shared stories and experiences. It's a shame there's so much negativity on a place meant to share and promote positivity during pregnancy.

While I appreciate the concern on this matter it was not meant to elicit such whiplash. I appreciate the honesty as well but to clarify things, there's is nothing that I do without consulting my doctor 1st. By no means would I ever consider taking any information from any one on a forum and base my actions on that alone or anyone other then my doctor.

As far as the remarks regarding my beauty habits, what I may find a part of my routine others may consider unnecessary and that's completely fine. Vain or not, I'm comfortable with what I choose to do.
