transvaginal or pelvic ultrasound @ 10.5 wks?

Hi everybody,

I am scheduled for an ultrasound at 10.5 weeks. The form says it will be transvaginal but I was curious if baby would be big enough for a regular ultrasound. Anyone have any experience with an ultrasound around this time and what kind of u/s was it? TIA!

Re: transvaginal or pelvic ultrasound @ 10.5 wks?

  • I had a t/v at 8 weeks (and 9 in a previous pregnancy), but my u/s at 10 weeks was transabdominal.
  • I've only had two u/s. One at 20 weeks with my first pregnancy and then one at 7 weeks that was t/v with this pregnancy. They probably just went ahead and scheduled a t/v because you're pretty sure to see the baby that way, whereas earlier in pregnancies it's harder to see the baby t/a.

  • I had an abdominal one done at 10 weeks. That was my first ultrasound. You can definitely tell there's a baby in there!

  • They scheduled me for a transvaginal u/s that took place at 9wks 2 days, but the tech ended up doing a abdominal u/s and we could see everything clearly. Best of luck with your first u/s!
  • 7 weeks was transvaginal and 10 weeks was transabdominal
  • 6 weeks was vaginal 10 weeks was abdominal for me.

  • I had my first u/s at 7 weeks, abdominal. It was actually very clear! I thought for sure they'd have to switch to t/v. At my OB they say they always try abdominal first and switch to t/v if they can't get a good image.
  • My first u/s was 10w2d. They did transvaginal. They did not attempt abdominal.

  • 10 weeks you would have no problem finding baby and heart beat on abdominal u/s... No need for Transvaginal! Also you may even be able to hear the heart beat by Doppler.. I could :)
  • Transvaginal is typically done first. More detailed and accurate. I had my first one at 8w5d.

My next one is abdominal. I'll be 12w5d.
  • I had a pelvic at 9w1d. Really clear and we could hear the heartbeat.

  • My 12 week scan was pelvic and I got to just sit there and watch baby move around. I think it depends the best way to get the information they need

  • I've had several pre-12 week u/s, and they've always been t/v.

  • My first u/s was at 8w3d and it was abdominal - I had an empty bladder and the lady said if they couldn't see baby good enough then they would have to do a t/v - thankfully we were able to see LO and see it's fluttering little heart!! My next appt is Thursday at 12w5d

  • I have had three so far (8 weeks and 2 at 12 weeks) due to some concerns about a SCH. All three have been abdominal bc they could see what they needed to but I was told they would have switched to t/v if they had had trouble.
  • With my last pregnancy I had an abdominal one done at 10 weeks and they were able to get measurements just fine. This time I had one at 8 weeks, 1 day and she had a really hard time getting a good measurement and almost switched to the trans-vaginal but then she tried one more time first and was able to get it. I am very thin though, so that may make a difference.
  • I had a t/v at 12 weeks with this pregnancy. I'd think it could go either way, but I'd go with the doc's preference so they could get the information they are looking for.

  • I've never had a transvaginal in either pregnancy. They have been able to find baby and heartbeat quickly at 7w for me.

  • 9 weeks and they were able to see everything through abdominal US
  • i had transvaginal U/S at 5weeks (last pregnancy)becoz i had bleeding and the doctor said the baby is too small for abdominal one but at 9weeks i repeated ultrasound and the U/S specialist said that vaginal is not needed coz the baby is big enough to be clearly seen in abdominal U/S
  • I had my first appt at 8w5d and it was a pelvic u/s. My midwife said if we can't see what we want with that, we would do the transvaginal one. We saw the HB so no need for the "Pringles can" as my DH calls it...
  • Depends on the ultrasound machine your OB has. Older machines will prob need TV, more modern can maybe do abdominal, depending on baby's location.
