Toddlers: 24 Months+

Left handed or Right handed??

When did you know for sure with your toddler?  What were the fool-proof signs?

DD seems to favor her left hand but sometimes does things with her right.  She sucks her left thumb, waves with her left hand and usually eats food with her left hand.  Just want to hear the experience of others.

  • I could definitely tell with DS when he started using a spoon.  If I put it in his left hand he would switch it to his right.  DH was SO hoping he would be left handed, but oh well!!  As a righty, and a teacher, I'm glad hes a righty cause it will be much easier for me to teach him how to write!!

  • DD does just about everything with her left hand. She eats with it, colors with it, waves with it, etc.
  • I am beginning to think that our DS is a lefty.  He grabs the spoon with the left hand, waves with left and grabs his toys mostly with his left hand.  I have a friend whose all three daugthers are lefty's.
  • I've read that you won't know for sure until they are 3-4 years old.

DD uses both hands and uses them both pretty well, so we have no idea which she will be.

That's what I've also heard.  Right now they are trying to figure out which hand they like the best.  My DD will switch depending on the day.  She eats with her right hand, colors with her left hand and waves with her left hand.

I've read that too, but for now, DD favors her right hand. She will pick up things with her left hand, but she waves, blows kisses, and holds her spoon with her right hand -- never her left.
