It really depends on you. Would you use and try all the products? Would you get your moneys worth? (I know it's as a gift, but still).
My friends gifted us a Citrus Lane trial subscription when ds was born, which is the same idea but with baby products (and something for mom). To me, it wasn't worth the cost to continue. We got some cute toys and books, but I didn't really use the other samples too much.
I loved my birchboxes. DH used to get a men's one and he loved his as well, we ended up cancelling them and getting dd the citruslane boxes each month, which are also awesome! I cant say enough good things about birchbox and citruslane. I also agree with pp's that it depends on the person. If you are into makeup and skin care then I think it's awesome. I'm about to sign up again to start getting my monthly boxes again.
I did birch box for a few months but barely used the stuff that came, I cancelled after about three months. I am addicted to the products I already use so it wasn't really for me.
