The "cute but expensive" costume is a Carter's monkey outfit, and the "cute but not as cute but waaaay cheaper" costume is a Carter's Dracula costume.

We bought 2 last year at BRU when they were on clearance. I had coupons and the cashier really screwed something up and I somehow ended up spending $.79 on each of them. Now I'm crossing my fingers they fit. If they don't, I probably won't get him a costume. I have a hard time spending a lot of money on something he'll only wear once maybe twice.

I chose the cheaper one, but it really depends on the price difference. Less than $10 difference and I'd just get the one I wanted.

I saw the Dracula one on their site (why so cheap?), but not the monkey. How much is the monkey? I think we are getting the owl this weekend.

I knew what I wanted dd to be and found one for 4.99 by chance. There are much cuter ones but they're at least $20 more. With the party and holidays coming up soon, I decided to save my money.

It would depend on the price and if I had the money. If you can afford it, buy the one that you will be happiest with.

In your situation I would save the money because who are we kidding our babies would be cute in a potato sack. < not what my kid's homemade costume is.
