Choroid plexus cysts with NEGATIVE MaterniT21 testing

Morning! Yesterday I had my Level 2 ultrasound (advanced maternal age-35). They found a choroid plexus cyst near the brain but are not concerned at all because of my negative MaterniT21 test and no other visible abnormalities. He wasn't going to give me another ultrasound because they apparently go away in the majority of cases, and even if they don't, they won't affect the baby after birth. But my tears and fear on my face must've been enough to convince him to have me back in 6 weeks to check it out. Has anyone else had experience with this?

  • At my A/S last week they saw a choroid plexus cyst as well. But since all the rest of the genetic testing came back very low risk, and there were no other abnormalities in the scan, the Dr told me the same thing: the cyst tends to just go away on its own by 28 weeks, so don't worry about it.

Of course I'm going to be a bit worried, but I trust the medical professionals to not lie to me when I asked them a few different times/ways to make sure there was nothing else wrong with the scan, etc. The Dr offered to schedule me another scan in 4+ weeks, but didn't think it was necessary.

Good luck at your next scan, I hope the cyst is all gone and baby looks fabulous!

  • FX for you.  I've seen a ton of women on TB in your same position so you are def not alone. I'm glad the doc didn't seem to concerned though that's definitely a little more re-assuring I'm sure.

  • FWIW, some AMA patients and some diabetics  (and some patients with other medical issues) get scans every 6 weeks after the 20 week scan for growth and monitoring (Biophysical profile, etc), so they may be offering you the repeat scan as part of their protocol.

Choroid plexus cysts are common sonographic findings in the second trimester, usually disappear in the third trimester, those that persist are typically asymptomatic and benign. Remember too that isolated (no other findings) CPC's are present in 1-2 percent of the normal population.

The association with chromosomal anomalies and CPC is with trisomy 18, not 21. If you are correct and the Materniti21 test was completely negative, this is low-risk for trisomies 13, 18 and 21.

Overall you should focus on the positives: your NORMAL anatomy scan save for an isolated cyst coupled with a NORMAL Materniti21. :)

  • My dr found a choroid plexus cyst as well at my u/s (I was 18 wks so a little early). She didn't seem concerned but offered a blood test since the look on my face was probably saying it all. I was a nervous wreck for 8 days waiting for the call, but all the bloodwork came back negative! I have another anatomy scan on 10/6 (I'll be 21 and a half weeks) because they didn't get to measure all they needed to since my first one was a little early.

Still a little nervous but the good report from the blood results helped so much! So excited to see my little girl again soon! She's a mover!!!
  • My DS had one and I was able to go back every 4 weeks until birth to monitor it. It resolved itself by 3rd tri. Doc explained it like a pimple that just clears up. Try not to worry!
  • They found these on my ultrasound a couple of weeks ago, and we went for our level 2 this week. They said that since it was a singular finding and our quad screen came back at 1 in 123K for trisomy 18, that we shouldn't worry about it. Our daughter had a dilated kidney, and we went in for ultrasounds every 3 weeks, since they expected that she would need surgery after birth. At 39 weeks, they determined that she just had a duplex kidney. I worried about it for months, so now I know that it's better to relax and understand that 99.9% of the time it's nothing!

  • My last DD was born early and had to have brain scans to make sure there was no bleeding. During those scans they found CPC as well and they said it was nothing to worry about and they usually go away on their own, they didn't even bother rechecking. She is now almost 2 and developing totally normal!  It seems scary but try not to worry too much :)

  • I'm in the same boat! I just found out that our baby has one CPC but was otherwise perfect (as my dr and sonographer said.) I am finally opting for the quad screen for some (hopefully) peace of mind, although part of me wishes I didn't do it. This has been the first time that Googling has actually made me feel better! These appear to be way more common than before, thanks to modern technology. It is certainly a blessing and a curse. I'm a hot mess now whole I wait for the results. I'm convinced I'll always worry about something with my little lady. I know just how stressful if is. Good luck and positive vibes your way!
