Hand Foot and Mouth

Hey ladies! Silas has HFAM...fun stuff! We've already been to the doctors, so I know what it is and that it has to just run its course. I always forget to ask something when at the doctors, so I figured I'd ask you all since lots of you have children already and it's no real medical question. If your kid has ever had this, did the rashes all blister? He has it all over his entire body, not just his hands, feet and mouth...so what I'm picturing in my head is a giant puss ball of a baby. He is on day three of having the rash, so Id just like to hear what I should expect. Thanks in advance!

Re: Hand Foot and Mouth

  • Every baby is different. Sometimes they do blister but not always. My daughter just had this last week. She only got them on her butt and in her mouth. They were gone by day 5 so hopefully your baby is almost over it!

  • My daughter also had this last week- this time it was really mild and no blisters.
She had it a few months back though and she had blisters ALL over. It took 2 weeks for them to all go away...

  • How old is Silas? My 5yo had it over the summer, and her rash on outside skin didn't blister at all. She had some blisters in her mouth and throat.

My pedi said that the younger the child, the more severe the rash usually is, and she warned me that it could look a lot different and a worse if my 2yo got it.

  • OMG!!! My DS3 has it right now. He had a wicked fever for a couple days then the blisters started. I think everyone is a little different. He doesn't have very many in his mouth but he has a ton around his mouth. It looks terrible but those don't seem to bother him. Just me. Last night he was up all night (maybe got 3 hours sleep tops)though with his hands and especially his feet itching like crazy. I can see one or two sores starting on his hands and feet and I have been soaking his feet in water and baking soda. This is the WORST! I would think if they haven't blistered in three days of having the rash they may not blister at all fingers crossed. They told me once the fever goes and no new blisters form he should be good to go back to preschool. Now just to deal with the mess on his poor little face. :(
  • @moonfaerie‌ he is 17 months. It is literally covering his entire body. It's amazing how fast it spread. He is starting to get some blisters now on his inner thighs. Poor guy. @kellyfo14‌ ugh his fever started Sunday afternoon and the rash started Tuesday. Tuesday overnight he screamed from 11:30pm to 3:30am. He screamed like I've never heard him scream before...he was throwing himself, it was insane. Last night we did an oatmeal bath and ibuprofen and he seems to feel a little better today. I know we live in the same tiny state lol. His doctor said this is the worst "outbreak" of this he's seen in 20 years. Yuck!

  • When DS to it last year he had blisters on his hands and feet. His feet ended up peeling and it took almost 6 weeks before they were totally 'normal' again.
  • Poor little guy. :( I hope he's much better soon. My pedi said the outbreak in my area was really bad this summer, too.

  • I hope he's better soon!  And you be careful too.  While most parents don't get it, my best friend ended up getting it on her hands and they peeled and were insanely sore...and then she didn't have feeling in the tips of her fingers for quite awhile.  Be sure to take care of both of you!!!

  • No experience here. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Your poor DS, that sounds absolutely terrible. I really hope he gets better soon! And same to you @kellyfo14‌!

  • Thanks ladies! How is your little one today??? Paul is still sleeping because we had a really rough night his feet were super itchy again so we soaked them and then he was just wide awake. He is still sleeping so maybe we will skip nap today and he can sleep through the night tonight fingers crossed!
  • @kellyfo14‌ Silas seems to be much better today thank god! His rash on his bum is much better, but a few spots did blister. He slept through the night last night so I'm hoping the worst is over. I am just amazed at how fast it comes on and then it goes away just as fast. The back of his hands still look pretty painful, especially after a bath, but it doesn't seem to bother him at this point. This was definitely a crazy illness. I hope Paul sleeps all night tonight!

  • Aww thanks! Yeah so far he only has one little blister on his hand and I started using neosporin around his mouth which is like a miracle drug, took all the redness out. I hope Silas is in the clear for the weekend. It is going to be beautiful!!!
