Sorry, I know you guys are probably so sick of me with these names, but I keep secondguessing myself and DH and I go round and round on this.

I also know I'm not spelling this the "correct" way, so if you feel it is too YOUNIQUE, please tell me in the comments below. We haven't told any family or friends our names, so I'm counting on you guys for your honesty!

If we named our little girl "Adalyn," how would you pronounce it?

  • I'm with @lovingaddi‌ that is how I would pronounce. I think that's what I chose on the options. I always second guess myself on the pronunciation polls haha.

  • I think it will most often get pronounced the way you want it to (first option in your poll). I'm pretty traditional when it comes to spelling names "correctly", but at the same time I think it would get mispronounced more often if it had an -ine ending. I definitely don't/wouldn't side eye the way you're spelling it. If you and DH love it, I say go for it (and try not to worry what others think - there are going to be people that dislike the name you choose no matter what name it is or how it's spelled). It's a beautiful name.

I actually don't have a problem with the way you are spelling it. It will keep her from being called "Add-a-LINE" and it isn't ugly to look at (like some yoonique spellings can be).

Now if you were spelling it Aduhlynn or something...yeah that would be a no.

This is why we chose to spell "Madelyn" with the -lyn.  I had the same thoughts about spelling at first, but I'm glad we went with this spelling.  She'll probably have to spell her name out for people, but I would rather have that than people mispronouncing it.  And FWIW, I think Adalyn is common enough that people will know how to pronounce.  It's a beautiful name.

  • For me, anything that has Lyn or Lynn I pronounce as Lynn.

If it has Line, then I pronounce it with the -ine (like nine) sound.

  • Thanks all. I thought the first pronounciation was pretty obvious, but DH was like "well maybe we should spell it Addalyn" so people get it's "add" no "AID." I'm like, no we're being unique enough as it is! lol
  • My name is Carolynn. Pronounced with the "lynn" not the "line" but I probably get called Caroline more often than I get Carolyn. Not always but I would guess slighlty more than half the time... It doesn't bother me, I completely answer to both, but just so you know- it won't matter how you spell it, really. People will say it the way they think the name is most common.

  • I voted add-a-lynn. I like your spelling, not too younique. Just right.
