NYC question

We will be coming to NYC for 2-3 days in a couple months prior to a cruise leaving from NJ. We are driving there so we will have a car and the car seats but I figured that the best thing to do is just park the car and use public transport. Being from suburban Ohio we do not deal with public transport here. Is the subway and the bus going to be the best way to get around in NYC with the kids? This may be a stupid question but I am assuming we can use the bus without car seats correct? Any tips for us? Any areas or things to avoid? I have never been myself so it will be a first all around so any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!  TIA

Yes, you are free to use the subway, bus, and cabs without car seats.  I would also second the recommendation not to bring a huge stroller; bring something that easily collapses to take on/off public transit.  Or use carriers, if you can!
