We got most of the face ones out, but since the dogs had tried to kill the thing (read: bit it more than once) their mouths were FULL of quills. They are at the vet waiting to be put under to get the rest. My GD, Dante, just sits so still while you work on him. Gypsy took me laying across her body while FI pulled. She's nearly 200lbs of pure muscle.
OH NO!!! Poor baby!! I never expected it to look quite like that!! I hope the vet can provide your sweet thing with some pain relief! Not to sound completely stupid, but where are you?? There aren't porcupines by me...we are stupid and think they are cute.

Central South Dakota. I used to think they were cute, too, when I lived in GA.
I've never seen a porcupine except maybe in a zoo, and I also thought they were cute...I would think the spines would deter the dogs from biting, at least more than once! Why would they keep biting at it when they were getting poked with quills?!
Oh my goodness!!! Poor pups!

T&Ps for a speedy recovery for your poor dogs!
::sigh:: I have no idea. I asked them both the same question. Dante is a moron anyway, but he's scared of sleeping kittens, so I have no idea why he was involved. Why couldn't they have just found a skunk? They both needed baths anyway, and a bath of vinegar and water is cheaper than vet bills.
Here's Gypsy. For the record, I wasn't just standing around taking pictures. FI had to remove the back seat from the expedition and run the kids to the bus stop before we could load them up. I needed the distraction so I would stay calm for them.
Holy shit! When you said wrestling with a porcupine I figured maybe 15 quills ended up on their faces! Poor pups
When our dog did the same thing, he got some quills through his tongue. Luckily it wasn't nearly as many as your guys, so we could get them all out ourselves, but still not pleasant.
Ugh! That sucks! My family has a hunting ranch between Huron and Mitchell, and one year the same thing happened to one of the dogs. It was horrible, and I hope your pup gets some relief soon!

Yes you'd think that we have porcupines and our Beagle got into one last summer, now whenever we see one we are extra careful because he will go after any porcupines he sees. They can be really stubborn, but the original porcupine started hanging around the area and our other dog eventually chased it up a tree and we had to kill it as it had gotten a habit of baiting the other dogs around our house! But it's crazy what dogs will actually go after if they are curious or if something gets on their turf. Our Shiba Inu went after a mama moose once. It was terrifying to watch.
My puppies are home and acting like nothing happened. The vet counted how many quills they pulled-357. They have some meds in case of infection, but other than that are just fine.

******stuck in the box****** Thank goodness they're ok! Can they eat and drink? I am still in disbelief, those poor pups!

Eating and drinking fine. I gave them each a bit of liver with their supper for being such good sports about the whole thing.

Our newfie chow mix we had when I was a kid attacked a porcupine once and had quills all down his throat. After they got them out he was fine, just groggy. That was a sucky emergency vet visit in the middle of the night tho, we were camping at the time. I hope your dogs feel better soon!
