Lactation cookies anyone??

edited September 2014 in September 2014 Moms
Sorry if this was asked or is common knowledge but I didn't see any questions or references to this directly. I made my first batch of lactation cookies yesterday and did not realize how many the recipe made! I seriously have like 2 1/2 dozen huge cookies. They are quite delicious (if I do say so myself) and I love sweets so I will eat a few a day, but how long will they feasibly last in a ziplock bag in my kitchen counter?

Edited for grammar because I was distracted (LO peed through his diaper and swaddle blanket again).

Re: Lactation cookies anyone??

  • My guess is that you can throw them into your freezer and pull them out when you want one and they will last months.

Freezer half the batch. Although, I have been going through mine so fast. They are great for restoring energy lost through breastfeeding. I've actually been eating my dough raw, which supposedly helps a little more. Good luck! :)

  • I heard they will last up to a week in the fridge, but most people freeze a bunch and pull out to use as needed.

  • I second the request for the recipe! :) How do they taste?

I actually only had one cup of brown sugar so I just used a full bag of dark chocolate chips (2 cups) to compensate and they came out wonderfully!! Definitely did not look like the picture on the we page and since I made them so large, I think I baked them for maybe 14 minutes instead. Now I've found other lactation cookie recipes, like a butterscotch pumpkin spice one for fall, a blueberry cheesecake one, a peanut butter one, and a chocolate chip toffee one!

I need butterscotch pumpkin spice lactation cookies!

Anyone know if you can do raisins and no chocolate chips for more of an oatmeal raisin taste?  Or will it not taste right?  I've never made any but I am very interested in them.  Any excuse to eat cookies.

  • Word to the wise: I found a recipe that mentioned 2 tbsp. of brewer's yeast, but 4 were recommended by someone who had made it. I had to throw them out. Way too bitter. Follow the recipe!
  • I didn't even know there were other flavors.. Mind blown.

  • Ahhh!! I'm so excited to try some of these recipes. DH did the grocery shopping and did not bring me home my requested treats! I'm excited for an excuse to eat cookies!
  • So I am super lazy and not a big baker.  I was googling easy lactation cookie recipes and I found one.   Some people will buy Betty Crocker oatmeal raisin cookie mix and add 1/2 cup of oats, 2 TBSP of the brewers yeast, and 2 TBSP of flax seed meal.  Mix the flax seed with 4-5 TBSP of water and let it sit for 3 minutes before adding.

So not healthy and tons of sugar, but I am going to try it!

Just curious, because I couldn't find this on the web, but do you have to eat lactation cookies to keep up an abundant supply or do they help BF mamas who are having trouble with their supply? Also, if I eat them, and them stop eating them, will my supply decrease?
  • @Ahlome08‌ I've been eating my cookies since two days before my inductions (so 3 weeks and 2 days ago) and was eating a LOT of them and had insane supply. Like, I was pumping almost 20 ounces a few times in the morning AFTER he would nurse, and would replenish very quickly. Was usually getting 12 ounces per pump (was pumping to relieve fullness) 3 times a day. I ran out of the dough my mom made me and froze about 4 days ago and got lazy about making more. Now I'm not even needing to pump at all to relieve fullness. So, I'm definitely chalking that up to not eating the cookies for a few days. For what it's worth, my mom was using a while lot of non bitter Brewers yeast-more than recommended. Around 6 tablespoons when 3 was recommended. Anyhow, I'm kind of kicking myself now for not making more sooner!

  • For those who have already made some cookies, any recommendations on freezing the dough vs freezing the baked cookies? I wondered if they would dry out in the freezer.

I would recommend freezing the dough so the cookies stay the same softness/crunchiness.

  • Saw this one that calls for M&Ms... they sell pumpkin spice M&Ms... umm yum?

I just tried the pumpkin spice M&Ms yesterday. They are good but to me they don't taste anything like pumpkin spice. I thought they just tasted like normal M&Ms.

I came back to report that I made these today. I couldn't find oatmeal raisin mix but I did find plain oatmeal. They are actually really good.
