Prenatal testing.

so I'm just wondering how other mothers feel about getting these tests done!?
Is it Nescesary for low risk pregnancys?
Or should I be doing it just to be safe?
But I don't want to be getting a false positive and be freaked out the whole time...

Me, personally, I'm getting pretty much any testing done that is recommended. That said, I'm not afraid to ask questions and I definitely do my own research on everything(not saying no one else does). The only test I am uncomfortable with is the amniocentesis and will try to go with other options, that is if it's ever brought up.

Which tests are you talking about? Most optional tests (as far as genetics go) are done in the first trimester...i believe (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I opted out of genetic testing in the first trimester, but since I'm high risk they tested me anyways at 19 weeks.

I am assuming this is another thread along the lines of yesterday's GD thread. The GBS swab was mentioned in one of the comments as being "optional"with someone's MW, as well.

Personally, I think that people who opt out of tests like this are behaving irresponsibly.  I can see the argument for not doing some of the genetic testing, if you feel that you would carry the baby to term and give them the best life possible.  Opting out of something that could have an impact on you or your baby's health is not ok.  The tests you receive later in pregnancy are designed to ensure that your baby (and you) can stay healthy while in the womb, and avoid an unnecessary NICU stay.  The tests really aren't that bad - even the 3 hour GTT isn't the end of the world.  

If my OB recommends it, I trust her judgement.  She is a professional and constantly educates herself on her field.  I'm just a mom with access to way too much false information.

If my midwife suggests a test, then I perform it. I have spent WAY too much money - but it's to verify the health of my child so I'm writing the checks.

The genetic testing completed in the first trimester are the only ones I would consider "optional." I think so much good comes from the anatomy scan around 20 weeks and the gestational diabetes scan is a must in my opinion. Regular doctor appointments and urine tests are truly non-negotiable.

It's amazing what modern medicine can address if an issue is known. It's when an issue isn't known that issues come out.

I personally have only done the recommended testing (I.e. Cystic Fibrosis screening, Nuchal Translucency, 1st and 2nd Maternity Panel Screenings). I didn't see the need for genetic testing like Harmony, Materniti21, and the Panorama test as I wasn't high risk and the NT Scan or any of my blood work didn't reveal any problens that required further testing. I will most likely continue with the recommended testing for the rest of the pregnancy (I.e. GD testing, B Strep Test, etc.) unless something happens *knock on wood* between now and D-Day!

I think it's all about weighing personal risk and knowing how you would deal with an issue. We did not get any testing done outside of routine ultrasounds and the only blood work I have had was the 9 week basic tests (blood type, glucose, thyroid, etc.). I will have a GD test at 28 weeks and another routine test but I can't remember what it is. If some issue arises I may need additional testing but so far everything has been perfect.

Considering our ages (24/26), family history, and overall health we are considered as low risk as they come. We also would not personally terminate for any reason. I know that being low risk doesn't mean there couldn't be an issue, but tests are rarely conclusive and there are plenty of things that can be wrong that the additional tests don't cover. But if I were in a higher risk category or just more nervous I might opt for more tests.
