Cloth Diapering

Does anyone make their own cloth diapers?

My MIL is being kind enough to make some cloth diapers for me, and I was wondering if anyone had experience with this and would have suggestions for the easier to make/best to make etc. :) Thanks in advance.

Currently we are looking at 3 All in ones (with the petal center for quicker drying); 3 pockets, 6-10 fitted, and then using some prefolds (IDK 12 or so?). Obviously we will be making covers- do you think 6 would be enough or do we need more?

We are going to use velcro closure as opposed to snaps.

Re: Does anyone make their own cloth diapers?

  • I've made inserts, because I hate the micro fiber that comes with most pocket diapers.  That's just cutting fabric and sewing it together.

Getting a good fit with a pattern is rather hard.  But then finding the right fit with purchased covers can also be tricky.

If she's good at sewing I would suggest having her do a couple different style patterns for the covers (2-3).

You'll need 6-8 covers for the newborn stage and another 6 covers for the one size stage.  It's very difficult to get a good fit with a OS during the newborn phase because their legs are so skinny.

I wonder if it might be helpful to use Softbums style legs for these. They have a drawstring of sorts, so it makes for a more customizable fit that might give you more guarantee that these diapers would work for your kiddo.
You could, but they would most likely have to be on the smaller side,  It would still create a lot of bulk to get the diapers small enough to fit.  At least with my newborn they would have needed to be tiny.  His hips and legs were small enough to fit in XS covers for 3 weeks.  And he was at 7 1/2 pounds at birth.

  • We will not be doing as much CD ing at first b/c at showers ppl have given us disposable- a lot will depend on her size and at first mostly prefolds. I also means to say we will have some flats as well.

Hadn't thought of a drawstring type thing around the legs.. hmmmm
  • That is kind of what I was thinking- a few NB covers and flats/prefolds for the NB stage and then introduce the others in the next size so they will last longer? Plus, then it is not as big of a deal with size variance. As of last Ultra sound she was running a bit small, I have another one mid Oct. so we shall see a bit better then.
