Candles

Hey mommies and mommies to be... I was wondering what your thoughts are on burning a candle in baby's room before she is even born just to get the room to have a nice clean refreshed smell. Of course once she is here I will not be burning candles in the nursery for the obvious safety reason but do you think it would be safe to do so prier to her even being born? Like having a scent in the room in general.

Re: Candles

  • I don't think it would do any serious harm, but I veer towards "fragrance free" stuff for my LO.

  • We did that in DS' room after DH painted and aired it out, just to sort of get rid of the new paint smell.  It was fine.  We also had one of those Glade gel cones for a while when he was a little older and that light scent didn't seem to bother him.  That may actually be a better idea because then you don't have to actually burn a candle and the scent is not at all overwhelming, it's really subtle.

  • I actually prefer the oil with wood wicks for scenting a room.  Nothing being burned, no risk of fire, and a nice warm soft scent that wafts through the room.

I use Bulk Apothecary since I use them as my supplier for PG and VG for the e-cig business.  However they have some seriously awesome shampoo, conditioner and soap -- all that you can either have unscented or add your own scent.

For the diffusers I pick up these things:
Mineral Oil or coconut oil depending on the fragrance mix I am doing.
You'll also need Vodka or some sort of clear alcohol.
OF course you can use any kind of glass jar you want and you may be able to find essential oils and you can find cheap mineral oil in the laxative isle at Walmart for under $2. But this gives you an idea of what to look for.

About a cup of oil mixed with 1/4 cup of alcohol about 2 tbls of essential oil.

I like mixtures of lavender, basil, and frankincense.... Grapefruit or orange (10 drops), honeysuckle, and the Thieves (Bulk Apothecary's version) -- it is warm and very aromatic, the citrus note gives is a slightly crisp tone which is refreshing.
I also like to do Rose, Lemongrass, and Sandlewood..which is warm and soft as well, nutmeg also goes good in this mix, just a couple drops.

You can do any mixture of essential oils but you pretty much want to be close to the ratios of base unscented oil/alcohol/essential oil.  I play around with mixing the scents, using the stronger ones in only a few drops or mls and the weaker ones as the main scents. It's fun to mix them for different moods. I tend to like the warmer base tones with lighter aromatic florals or crisp citrus. The other thing I like about Bulk Apothecary is that they have scents from some of the popular places like Bath and Body Works, and most of them smell almost exactly like their scents.

  • @mamabumkin‌ that was very informative! Thanks!

The only thing I've done is use one of those stuffed animals with a pouch of lavender in it from Sentsy. It smells great! Its also baby safe for when it is older.

I've been doing a lot with essential oils for cleaners and bath products lately though, so I may try making some diffusers.
