Breastfeeding

Pumping frequency

My LO is 4 months old and he is EBF at home 4-5 days per week. He eats about every 3 hours during the day. Recently, he has been refusing to take a bottle from the nanny until after 3.5-4 hours, so he often ends up only taking 2, 4-4.5 oz bottles when I am gone for 9 hrs. I was pumping at work 3 x, though the last pump is about an hour before I pick him up. If he only takes 2 bottles, he wants to eat again around the time I pick him up, but if I just pumped I won't have much milk to feed him. I am wondering do I drop the third pump and breastfeed when I pick him up? Or do I pump and if he doesn't take the third bottle from the nanny, just give him expressed BM? There is no one else at home to feed him a bottle and he has taken a bottle from me before, but I would much rather nurse. I just don't want to risk supply issues by only pumping twice? Any advice? Thanks so much!

Re: Pumping frequency

  • I sometimes pump an hour before I pick LO and he wants to nurse right when we get home. It seems to go fine. He may nurse a little longer than usual but he doesn't seem dissatisfied.

  • at this age, it's probably a good idea to keep that 3rd pump to keep your supply up.

sometimes i'd get busy at work and end up doing my 3rd pump really late, to the point where i'd be nursing DS about 2 hours later. he always seemed perfectly content with what he got from nursing.

DS didn't always finish his 3rd bottle, either, but that ended up being fine- i nursed him right when i got home, and then i had extra to freeze. it's nice to have the extra for when you transition down to 2 pumps a day.
