Babies measurements are way off at A/S scan

Has anyone ever dealt with measurements being way off at your a/s scan? I had a ultrasound at 16 weeks and she was measuring on schedule within 3 days before or after my EDD. I had to reschedule my a/s scan for 20 weeks to 22 weeks. I went in now she is measuring way off. Her head & abdomen are only around the 20 week range barely but her arms & legs are measuring right on track and even more than 22 weeks. My doctor sent a referral to high risk doctor to do another scan. I really didn't get any answers just more of a shoulder shrug. Anyone else experience this before? I know the measurements could just be off but I want to know all my options.

Re: Babies measurements are way off at A/S scan

  • I would try to not worry yet. By 20 weeks, babies have started to grow at their own paces. Your baby girl may have a small head and tummy! DS2 had some 19 week measurements at our 21wk a/s. The measurements all averaged out to sizing him up at 20w3d when I was 21w. He was on the small side. He was just tiny when born (5 lb. 6oz at 36w0d). It is probably nothing to worry about, but the high-risk doctor should be able to tell you more. I would be frustrated, though, if I were you, and my doctor didn't offer me any explanation or reassurance.

    Good luck!

  • Personally LO was measuring about a week ahead all around for my 20 w scan, which is pretty common given my diabetes but I've known many women that have had babies measuring off the expected size for when the scan was done.  99% of those women had no issues in the end, it was just that was how their LO developed.  It's not uncommon to have baby not measuring up to the exactly where the "norms" are.

I completely understand your worries.  If you can I would bring it up to your doctor at your next appointment and that might help relieve some of the worry.

  • At 19 weeks my LO's head was ahead, her tummy was right on and her legs were short. Now at 28 weeks, her head is behind, her tummy is ahead and her legs are right on. She will be checked again in a few weeks to make sure she is still growing, just at her own pace.
