TTC After a Loss

Question from a lurker

I've been lurking since my cp early this month. We found out a week ago that my DHs sperm culture was positive for the enterococcus bacteria. Get is currently on antibiotics and we were told to wait one period because if the cp and now told to wait until we confirm via another culture that my DHs infection has cleared. We are seeing a urologist but not until the end of October as that was first appt. I'm concerned that I should be on antibiotics in case the infection spread to me via sex. My RE does not think I need antibiotics but also does not know if this could have caused my cp. I'm nervous that if I am infected I will have another miscarriage. Anyone deal with thus enterococcus bacteria and if so did you take meds as well. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Question from a lurker

  • Let me preface this by stressing that I am wholly unfamiliar with that particular bacterial strain and what it does. However, I did not want to leave you hanging, if no one here did either, and I can give an educated guess based on related education and experience. Certain infections can damage sperm. However, usually it destroys individual sperm cells or damages them to the point that they can neither swim well or implant successfully. It is possible that your RE believes that this was the case and therefore the infection needs treatment, but would not have contributed to a c/p because only an uneffected sperm would have successfully implanted. It is also possible that this particular infection is spread through a different vector than sexual transmission, so she wouldn't see the need to treat you as well. However, these are just possible reasons of motivation behind your RE's decisions. I strongly suggest that you call back and ask to go over it again until you feel comfortable with her answers. If fails, then it would be an appropriate time to seek a secondary opinion from another RE, even if you decide to remain under treatment of your current doctor. Best of luck.
Thank you. I really appreciate your thoughts. I will ask further questions when I speak to the urologist with my husband. I just don't want to wait that long but would probably have to wait just as long for another RE. I'm just very worried about another cp/mc.

  • Just did some quick poking around - looks like it's not contagious to you (in fact, this is a bacteria that is commonly found in your vagina in the first place). Also, it depends on where the bacteria is located, but it could either be preventing your husband from producing sperm in the first place, preventing the sperm from maturing, or damaging the sperm as it exits the urethra. I'm fairly certain it wouldn't cause your CP because, like Petra said, it's very likely that these sperm (if they were produced) would not even reach the ovum. Hope this helps =)

  • Thanks everyone for your input. I did try google but could not find the contagious or not contagious info. @mflowers929‌ you are a much better researcher than me. Thanks for the info.
