WWYD sick (?) toddler and activities

So DD was sick yesterday/last night, and this is the first time she's been sick like this. I'm not sure when it's okay to go back to activities...just when she seems better?

TMI info: yesterday she woke up halfway through nap and puked everywhere. She was pretty inconsolable for the afternoon and fell right to sleep at bedtime, but was sick from midnight till 4 am (it was a literal shitshow). Seemed better when she woke up, has been playing hard all day and eating and drinking normally. The only thing I'm nervous about is that she hasn't had a dirty diaper since last night and those were...not normal.

We have swim tonight and I'm leaning towards skipping because I don't want to deal with that diaper situation in the pool. We also have a morning class tomorrow.

When would you get back into routine? Am I being over cautious about skipping swim?

  • ABSOLUTELY skip swim!!!! With a baby with possible diarrhea, definitely skip swim. She will likely still be contagious via fecal matter for a few days or even weeks depending on what she had.

If she has been fine all day today and has no fever, I would resume activities tomorrow. However, I would not do swim for a few days.

This. Imagine diarrhea in a pool full of toddlers. Ya, it's not a pretty sight.

I would just keep her hydrated and once she gets back to regular stools then resume pool activities.

  • Yeah I figured swim was not a good idea. Hopefully her next diaper will be normal and we can go to ecfe tomorrow.

  • I wait until DD has been symptom free for 48 hours before getting back to activities.

  • Yea I would definitely skip swim and maybe tomorrows morning class based on the next diaper. Hope she feels better!

Typically a good rule to go by is 24 hours puke-free/diarrhea-free/fever-free. Definitely skip swim tonight.
This. I swear half the stomach bugs and sore throats we've had this summer are from DS' swim class. We always stay away if there was vomiting, fever or diarrhea in the last 24 hours.

  • Thanks everyone!  We skipped swim tonight and don't have another swim class till next week so hopefully we will be good for tomorrow's ECFE class!  It's so hard when you have to keep them home but they still have energy...
