I'm asking because my DD is not gaining weight like her pedi would like, despite growing normally otherwise (height, head measurements, shape, etc.). She is EFF and takes about 22-25 oz per day, between about 5 bottles.
I follow her cues and stop feeding her when she pushes the bottle out of her mouth and spits out the formula (usually after 4-5 oz). I don't want to overfeed her, but her pedi wants me to add in a feeding to try to get her to gain.
I am going to try it, but I was wondering if anyone else had this issue? How did you solve it?
My DH and I were small children and are more petite adults, so I'm wondering if that's just how she's going to be.
I won't be much help. We are on the opposite end of the spectrum. We FF because DS wasn't gaining weight despite BF around the clock. Since starting formula he does nothing but eat. He is 11 weeks and weighed 12lb at his 2mo appt. he was 7 lb 8 oz at birth. he eats 5oz bottles 6-7 times a day....YES...that is 30+ ounces a day.
I was so afraid I was over feeding him because of the number, but I feed on demand, try the paci before the bottle, stop whenever he pushes bottle away, etc. I talked to pedi at 2mo appt and she was not concerned. Said to feed him if he's hungry. I guess since he didn't gain anything the first 4 weeks of his life he's catching up now!
U might be right...your little lady might just be petite.
DS was 3lbs 7.8oz at birth and just over 8lbs at 2 months. He literally wasn't even on the growth chart at that point yet. At two months, he was on Similac Neosure for the extra calories.
Has she dropped in terms of percentiles? My pedi always said it's not about pounds/ounces as much as it is about where they fall on the curve and whether or not that changes.
She hasn't even gained two pounds since birth and now weighs just under 9 lbs. She's not following a curve at all and went from 24th to 2nd. However, she has grown 4" in height since birth.
I tried adding in a bottle yesterday and she took maybe an ounce and a half and wouldn't take anymore. I will keep trying today.
She is a very happy baby, always smiling and cooing, and this whole thing just makes me feel terrible.
LO was 8 pounds 5 ounces at birth and at 2 months was up to 10 pounds 9 ounces. Today at 3 months he was 11 pounds 7 ounces. He is growing lengthwise, meeting his milestones etc so my pedi isn't too concerned just yet. He is dropping percentiles though due to his digestion issues that we are working on.
Remember that in order for their to be a 50% there has to be bigger and smaller babies. As long as she is meeting her milestones and staying on a growth curve then I wouldn't stress too much over it. If she wants to take more then great, but don't force it.
You could try adding in 1/2 to a whole ounce to a bottle or two a day and see how she reacts to it instead of trying to fit in a whole new feed.
We had the same issue but with reflux as well and we went to a concentrated Version of hifomula so he can get 24 call per oz vs 20 there is also a 22 oz Cal formula they use for premature babies if you need extra calories and can't get another bottle in there are options out there with out adding another feed. Our little guy is 5 months and 13.04 lbs at birth he weight 7.08 with a bout a little over a 1 lb loss from my milk not coming in
We also might not be the norm, but my LO is 9 weeks, 10 lbs 3 oz (was 7 lbs 11 oz at birth). I BF first (gets about 1 oz based on weighted feeds) and then 2-2.5 oz of formula. This is 8 times in 24 hours (every 2.5ish hours during the day with longer stretches at night). She did fall from 50th to 10th percentile, however due to BF supply issues she really didn't gain anything until after 5 weeks once we'd added in formula to top her up.
My DD was 7lb 4oz at birth and 10lb 14oz at 2 months. She was in the 50th percentile for weight at her one month appointment and dropped to the 31st for 2 months, but she had just gotten over a cold. She grew almost 4" in length since birth so pedi didn't seem overly concerned. She also eats around 20-24oz per day.
My DD weighed 8lb 2oz at birth. At 1 week she weighed 7lb 6oz since we were having BFing issues. I switched to mostly FF and at 2 months she weighed 10lb 8oz. Her pedi was hoping she would be closer to 11lb but since she's been growing at a steady rate he isn't worried. My DH and I are both really skinny. Last week she was eating 5-6oz every 3 hrs but it must've been a growth spurt. Now she eats 3.5-4.5oz every 2-3 hrs. She tends to drink the most before going to bed and least in the motn (she wakes up 1-2x).
I also worry about overfeeding but our pedi says babies don't overeat and if she drinks too much the excess will come back out...My DD usually rolls her eyes and closes her mouth when full. When she's hungry she spits the paci out and screams red-faced until she gets a bottle lol.
