How much do you tip a party bus driver?

edited September 2014 in October 2013 Moms
I'm in charge of orchestrating a bar crawl/scavenger hunt for a big conference that my district is hosting next month. My coworker and I have raised over $700 just for the entertainment budget (all monies are on our own-none from the organization...whomp whomp) so we're pretty psyched. We're trying to figure out how to best utilize our funds and are trying to budget in a tip for the driver. I've ridden on a party bus, but never reserved. So, since O13 is #pollallthethings, clearly I had to ask.

  • First response should be <$50....sorry, poll virgin here.

  • Boy, I have like zero experience with this. What is the rule for, like, long cab rides? Is it comparable? Also, this makes me think of that Seinfeld where they are talking about what to tip the Skycap at the airport that takes your bag.

  • Ive been the organizer for at least 15 party buses.  I can usually get everyone to pay $40 and that includes the bus, a 20% tip and me going out and stocking the bus with beer, alcohol, cups and mixers.

  • I asked DH because he manages a cab service. He has follow-up questions. How much will the bill be not including tip? Are you hiring from a private company or is it a dude with a bus? How drunk is everyone likely to be?

  • @Lee81‌ It's going to be about $400 without tip and it's a private company. People will be drunk, but it's a work related conference so I'm assuming (maybe naively) that people won't be too out of control.....???
  • @ashleymarie512- how long will you be needing the bus? DH said that $80 (figuring on 20%) is a lot if you're only keeping the driver for two hours, but if it's six or eight than it's pretty reasonable.

  • Normally I am shitfaced on a party bus so I usually just empty my wallet at the end if the night. Tyre story.

    10-15% seems appropriate.

  • I said $50-$100 because I feel like you should tip at least $50. 20% is around $80 so if you feel the driver was really great or if the crew got a little out of hand then you could tip closer to that. I also agree with @Lee81‌ that if you are going to have this bus for 6 hours or so then I would do 20% as a starting point.

  • Ok, thanks guys. It'll be six hours, so I was thinking more along the lines of 20% also.
  • Tyre story lol.
