Pregnant after IF

the dreaded gestational diabetes

so it's official, I failed both the 1 hour and 3 hour glucose tests, badly.  I've had sugar issues my whole life + PCOS, so I always knew this was a possibility, but it's really frustrating that this is happening, given I'm religious about exercise (4x a week, 60 min each workout + 1x week workout with a trainer throughout pregnancy) and eating well/ low carb/ no sugar.  I have gained 22 # during pregnancy, so I'm within normal range and I'm just so annoyed.

Now I have to start finger sticks and keeping a food diary.  Anyone else who can commiserate with me or offer any helpful advice if you've been in the same position?

Re: the dreaded gestational diabetes

  • So sorry to hear.  Just a random fact I wanted to share from my OB who runs a breastfeeding clinic, she said if diagnosed with GD, breastfeeding reducing your risk of developing diabetes by 50%.  We had a lengthy conversation because GD runs in my family and both my parents have type II diabetes.  Unfortunately, genetics definitely plays a part.

  • I have it. I had it with my last pregnancy and it went away in between. I also have pcos and used to be type 2 until I had the gastric sleeve. I went 2 years with normal a1c levels so the doc said I didn't have to say I had it anymore.

Anyway.....I've been on insulin since week 16ish (may have been earlier or a bit later) but I knew it was inevitable.

The hardest part for me to understand (last time, now I get it lol) that you don't follow a typical diabetic diet. You have to eat carbs because the baby need them. Not saying all the junk (but believe me I'm not perfect) but ya know. I'm mobile so I can't tell how far along you are, but I do know once you reach a certain gestational age your hormones are gonna do what they wanna do.

  • :(:( Sorry to hear. I received my 3 hour test results back today, and I have it too, so I can relate to how disappointing it is. I also already try to eat healthy, but never "counted carbs" before. And I love fruit, so it's a huge bummer. Do you have to go to a class? My OB referred me to a class at the hospital that I'll go to this Wednesday to learn what I need to do to manage it. Such a bummer, but everyone keeps telling me it's manageable, just takes discipline and eating things that you normally may not. For me, that's cottage cheese - I can't stand the texture, but everywhere keeps saying it's a good choice being high in protein, low in fat & carbs. Hang in there, it's not for too long much longer.
