Nap issues.

edited September 2014 in July 2014 Moms
Forgive me if this has already been discussed. My 11 weeks old is on a nap strike. He wakes up after only 20 or 30 minutes every. single. time. He wants to be held all day so I'm a little exhausted and I know he is too. He sleeps great during the night (only waking once for a feeding around 3:00 am) but I know he should be sleeping for longer during the day. At night we swaddle tight and he's been sleeping in his swing. I haven't been swaddling for naps but still put him in the swing. He hates laying flat. Anyone have any great nap tips?

  • This is us exactly!!! She's 11 weeks today and the past few days have been a nap nightmare. She does great at night... 5-7 hours, wakes for feeding and back down for about another 3 hours. But she only cat naps during the day anywhere from 5-45 min. She is a major grouch by late afternoon. We've hit the hour mark for the nap she's taking right now. Woohoo!!! Hopefully it was just a growth spurt and we're back to normal. Good luck! Prayers for happy napping babies!!!

  • Same. Sleeps great at night (one MOTN feed) but naps are generally about 30 min. She's still so tired but won't go back to sleep, evening time means cranky and tired LO. Pediatrician said she's a cat-napper. We've tried different locations (crib, swing, car seat) swaddle, no swaddle, etc. occasionally if we're out I'll get a longer nap in the car seat but never at home. I'd love to break this habit if anyone knows how!

  • I asked my pedi about his short naps (20-35 minutes) at his 8 week checkup and she said that he wouldn't nap for long periods until more like 4 months.

  • Thank you for posting this!!! We are almost 12 weeks and she's horrible! Everything ya'll are saying is true for me, but I'm not even getting 20 minutes of a nap unless I'm driving around! She closes her eyes enough for me to walk 10 steps away and then wham!!! A whole lot of talking or crying. Ugh! But she's not waking in the middle of the night and sleeps straight through

  • DS was on a nap strike last week, but it passed. There were a few days I was so frazzled because he would only nap if I held him and cry and wake up as soon as I put him down. This week we are back to the norm of a good 2 hour nap and then an hour nap a couple hours later. We have still had him in the swing. We only swaddled at night, but I'll use the A & A blanket and tuck it around his arms so he doesn't flail and then put a warmer blanket on top of that and turn the air down a bit so it's chilly and he's snuggled up in it. Plus I use white noise for naps and not at night (we do use fans at night though).

It should pass. You're doing great!

  • Sounds like he's waking after one sleep cycle and unable to put himself back to sleep. When LO does this, I give him a few minutes to fuss to see if he'll go back to sleep. If not, I usually reset the white noise (change tunes if I have to) and rub his head to see if he'll go back to sleep. If he's for sure done sleeping I just start the eat, play, sleep cycle again.

But mine's only coming on 8 weeks so I'm sure what works now will all go to shit in the next month.
  • Wow I could have written this exact post. Sorry no help here. My LO is 12w on Thursday. He has never been a good napper and only sleeps in my arms for longer than 45min. Fingers crossed this gets better!
  • Same LO is 10 weeks and going through this exactly...ugh!

  • I went through this with my LO until I realized that I wasn't giving her a chance to put herself back to sleep.
She used to nap for 30 minutes and wake up, and as soon as she fussed, I would run to pick her up. Now, I swaddle her, put her in the swing with white noise and I walk out of the room. If she wakes up after 30 minutes, I just leave her to fuss a little and give her time to put herself back to sleep. She usually takes a morning nap between 2-4 hours. Maybe you're not giving you LO a chance to put himself back to sleep. And I would definitely swaddle!

    This.
And my LO will be 12 weeks on Thursday too @Aab7114‌
  • Thank you all!! This afternoon i swaddled him tight, turned on white noise louder than usual and turned the ceiling fan on low. He napped for an hour so it definitely helped!

  • Does he like the car? Ill put DD in the car and drive around for 10 minutes or so. Sometimes just strapping her in her carseat knocks her out. Lately I've found just wrapping her up in a fuzzy blanket knocks her out too. Hope you can get some relief!
  • Mine also likes to be held to sleep. He will nap in the bouncer, bassinet, stroller, etc., but not for long periods of time. I remember DD started to nap for longer periods of time around 4 months. Fingers crossed!
