Tdap side effects question

Hey ladies!

I had my Tdap shot on Friday morning and my arm has been super sore ever since. It has gotten better and the nurse did warn me that I would probably experience some pain but I also notice redness near the injection. Has anyone else experienced this? I plan to call anyway just to ask but wondering what your experiences have been? Thanks!

Re: Tdap side effects question

  • Yes to both!! It went away after about 3-4 days for me. I was given a laundry list of side effects & the nurse said the soreness along with some redness and slight swelling were most common. Hope your arm feels better soon!

Ok good to know. Sorry you experienced this too but glad to know that it seems normal.
  • I had both as well, it can definitely be normal as can some knotting (where it feels like there's knots/bumps under the injection site). My pain & tenderness lasted for just over a week. Rubbing/massaging the area afterward can help, and if you have any knots rubbing with a warm compress can work wonders. Hope it feels better soon!

This. The more you move your arm the faster the soreness and redness will typically go away. Hope your arm starts to feel less sore!

  • Sore for a week. I was gonna get it in my right arm because I anticipated soreness, but the nurse convinced me to go with my dominant arm because "pain would go away faster with use." What kind of logic is that. If I don't use my right arm then I wouldn't have as much pain. Never again

  • I was only sore for a day but definitely noticed that the TDAP caused more soreness than the flu shot (they did one in each arm). I didn't have any redness or itching, and nor did my husband (OB gave it to him too).

If it's minor redness and swelling I wouldn't worry yet.

  • The last time I had the tdap I had the soreness plus a lot of swelling at the injection site. I got mine on Friday also and so far have just had the soreness. I think it's normal.

  • I had rhogam, tdap, and the flu shot all at once. Probably not the best idea, but oh well.I was sore for a day or so, and the next day I felt pretty crummy. But I don't know whether than was from the shots or not (feeling feverish but no fever) or which shot caused the most tenderness.

I think you are okay unless you start seeing a rash, but you should have been given an info sheet on the tdap with things to look out for I think. Or at least, I was.
  • I had tdap and the flu shot at the same time in opposite arms, definitely hurt like heck! Just under a week later and all the pain is gone. I also had some redness from the tdap, went away in about 2-3 days.

  • I wasn't warned that the TDAP would hurt. The soreness lasted for about 24 hours. No redness. I found that it helped to move my arm around and loosen it up.

  • i had tdap 2years ago and couldn't use my arm it hurt like I literally got shot!!! I got it again two weeks ago from my manager. It was slightly sore no redness or swelling. I even woke up laying on that arm. I truly believe it also depends on who gives it to you. tdap normally hurts and it is the tetanus part that hurts.

    Hope you feel better soon
  • Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. This helped a lot. Today the soreness has pretty much gone away except if I touch it and the redness is much better.
  • TDAP hurt my arm for a solid three days. I tried icing the area of injection to help some. I was never warned of any side effects/pain afterwards. I get three allergy shots every three weeks and got the flu shot yesterday and neither had painful lasting effects like TDAP.
