Did you switch your obgyn after 30w and how did it go?

Possible? Impossible? Why did u switch?
I posted on fri about my doc scheduling me for c section since at 30 w scan my baby was breech so i know thats probably protocol/just jn case deal however im just beginning to think c section is what he would prefer anyway (sticking to schedule, extremely busy office, less time for him etc) so not sure what to do. Im 31 w tomorrow...

  • @Econosaurus‌ thanks. Yes i plan to but i was so rushed out of office that day. Ill talk to him at my 32 week check up but meanwhile i feel i need to start thinking more. His wait times are extremely long as well -2-3 hours so thats another reason in considering switch as being 7 months preg with a toddler its getting to be very hard. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • My OB is leaving his current practice, so I will see my new OB for the 1st time at my 36 week appt... Right when they start getting fun! I'm a little worried but have heard wonderful things about my new doctor. In all honesty, I know there's a good possibility my OB may not be present for delivery, as hard as he might try. As long as someone gets my baby boy here healthy and keeps me alive, I really don't care :) Got to trust our physicians/midwives!

I'm 31 weeks now, but I plan to switch doctors @ 34 or 35 weeks.

I started seeing my current dr because he's only about 20 minutes away from my house. He delivers at the birthing center I've been having all my Prenatal appointments at. He's nice, but I had a lot of struggles with the birth of my first daughter and want to deliver at a hospital with a better NICU just in case and my doctor thinks it's a good idea for me to transfer to the other location about 40 minutes away (still in his group) because I'm overweight and higher risk.

I'm actually excited to deliver at the hospital instead of the birthing center. The birthing center is nice and all, but my best friend is the lactation consultant at the hospital I'm going to deliver at and the hospital is in a much more affluent area.

I'll only have to see my new doctor for a couple appointments before I deliver. He probably won't even deliver me anyway. I know it may seem impersonal, but I really don't care. If it were my first pregnancy/delivery I'd probably feel more uncomfortable with it, but all my modesty is gone now and I know when I do deliver I won't care who is there. All I'll care about is getting that baby out.

ETA I'm thinking my transition will go pretty smoothly since I have Kaiser- like insurance. It's all in the same network and even computer network, just different dr and hospital. Both drs have the same medical info (test results, medical history etc.)

  • Not really the same situation as yours..my OB is closing his office mid-October so I had to find someone else.  I had such a great relationship with him & his staff so I was pretty devastated that they were closing a month before my due date.

I went to my new OB on Friday & I was on the verge of tears the entire time (thanks, hormones).  The new OB spent a lot of time with me, answered every question I had and I felt he really tried to put me at ease about switching.  I asked about their practice's views regarding c-sections, episiotomies, medical interventions, etc. and it helped me to feel like we were on the same page.

If I were in your situation, I would try to have an open, direct, honest conversation with your current OB first before deciding to switch or not.  I completely understand how a 2-3 hour wait is inconvenient, but I honestly feel like it's a little late in the game for that to be a driving reason to leave a practice.  Just my opinion.

  • I didn't switch after 30 weeks, but I did switch more than halfway through my pregnancy. It's a totally different situation than yours though, because I moved from NYC to Michigan. Both of my OBs have been great though. I've never been to the hospital where I'll deliver with my new OB (assuming she'll be there, despite the possibility that she might not be), so I'm taking a tour of the obstetrical unit this week.

I would say to talk more with your doctor, but to ultimately trust your instincts. Also, I don't know if you've given it a try already, but there are methods people use to attempt to turn breech babies, and your OB might even be able to help. One site I've heard of is https://spinningbabies.com/.

  •  I switched at 38 weeks last time! I had one whole appt before I went into labor. The doctor who delivered was quite nice considering we met for the first time at 4 am lol.

I'm glad I did-I've followed your post OP and I would switch in your situation.

  • Totally possible and really nbd unless there are major medical issues going on.

I switched with my last pregnancy at 36w from a hospital MW to a home birth MW. Pretty big change! It went very well though.

  • I thought you got some very good advice in the two threads you posted on your doc and the c-section. Did you read any of the responses? Guessing no if you still haven't talked to your doctor about it and are still assuming the reasoning behind it.

I am still thinking about everything and i will be talking to my doctor at next appt. All responses were very helpful to me.
  • I just switched 2 weeks ago at 30 weeks, since we'll be moving. I loved my OB and he delivered my first child, so it was a really difficult decision but ultimately I didn't want to be an hour from my doctor or the hospital at the end. The new practice I'm going to is much larger (about 9 OBs) and they're trying to cycle me through as many doctors as I can before I deliver as you never know who will be on call at the hospital, so there is the very real potential that a complete stranger can deliver my baby. This being my second go around, I know it's really the nurse who does all the work with you and the doctor is just there to catch...lol. I really liked the first doctor I met and I have several family members who go to this practice, so I'm just having faith that they are all professionals and will deliver my baby safely.
