Decreased appetite??

Is this happening to anyone else? At just over 33 weeks I've gone from wanting all the food to feeling straight up first trimester, nothing sounds good, eating is a chore. I assume it's the baby cramping my stomach but it's a little annoying. I even went 3 places today with sweets and got nothing! Something is changing!

Re: Decreased appetite??

  • I have days like that, where nothing looks or sounds good and I have to force myself to eat.

  • I had one of those days today.
  • Yep. I wanted to cry today cause I had to go buy food for the week and I had no idea what to get because nothing sounded good.
  • Sadly I feel like that's been 75-85% of my pregnancy. Even when I have craved all the food, I have rarely been able to have a big meal and typically ended up regretting it!

I could on occasion out eat my foot taller and 80lb heavier DH pre-pregnancy... and did I mention even with the lack of appetite while pregnant that I've felt super stabby if DH asked to have some of my food? And that I've wanted to steal food from families plates? Weird, all so very weird.

I have that a lot. Even when something sounds good, I eat a small portion and I'm too full to eat any more. I always assumed it was more babies = less tummy space.

  • Yes. I have been having that problem. I am almost 33 weeks.
  • I am 34 weeks today and it's been that way for me about a week. I've gone from eating constantly to maybe one actual meal and one snack for the entire day. And it seems like half the things I do eat give me nasty reflux. Just another thing I deeply dislike about 3rd tri.

  • @meeshybee‌ I got an Odwalla chocolate protein shake today because I didn't want a meal but obviously can't start missing calories. It was a good replacement I might do a couple times a week if this keeps up.
  • @MrsG1019‌ it's a good reminder to keep eating! Best of luck and hope your babe continues to grow nice and healthy.
  • Thank You! It's challenging but eating Is good! ;)

  • My doctor also told me I could use meal replacement drinks (boost, ensure, instant breakfast even), not instead of food, but for those times when I was thirsty but not hungry.  Forces some calories in.  Boost comes in lots of variations (extra calcium/fiber/protein/calories).
  • I have noticed this too recently. I am not eating near as much. At least somedays. I have been a human garbage disposal since my BFP. It's really slowed down though.

  • I am too tired to be bothered making food lately and by the time I do I have no interest in eating it... Cereal has become a new dinner food in our house when DH is working nights so the kids think its great fun to have breakfast for dinner...

Its also largely due to the extereme amount of heartburn I get if I eat too much and it seems like everything is triggering it lately =(

  • I love to cook but can hardly eat half portions when I do.  Nothing sounds good and asking DH what he wants is useless (the old "IDK what do you want").  Less food but more frequently is how its been lately.

I did have a two week bout where I could barely even choke down water, it would just sit and be painful right at the top of my tummy, under my boobs.  LO still grew so all was ok, but it was exhausting to eat anything.....lived on Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast for those weeks.  No bueno.

  • Wow had no idea so many others were experiencing this. 32 wks and havent been hungry for the past like two weeks. I have been planning meals specifically for the baby....healthy and balanced even though it's the last thing I want. Such dedication, so mother. Wow.

  •  Yeah, baby is taking up room where my stomach would normally go I guess so I'm eating smaller meals, and slower. It's happened to me in every pregnancy-I've never once sent dh out for a late night snack or ice cream or any of that!
  • I've noticed a significant decrease in my appetite as well. I'm 30 weeks and I noticed the last few days that I'm still hungry, just not as frequently as before. I went 6 hours without eating while at work yesterday, which is very unusual for me. I've been needing to eat every 2-3 hours up until now, especially on the days I'm working. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this, I was a little worried something was wrong with me!

Yes ma'am! Doctor said this was normal but I was told I have to really not give into it cuz it can really effect the baby in some cases -- especially when combined with the fact that most women have a bit of a spike in energy levels & physical exertion around the same time that appetite decreases. In my personal case I gave in to the decreased appetite & baby boy stopped growing so I was told to significantly increase my food and protein intake & if he doesn't gain weight he'll have to be taken early. Your situation of course might be different but just sharing my experience so far.
Echoing @jj0313's sentiments.  Hoping that your little one keeps growing and stays cooking.

I have been feeling the loss of appetite also over the last few weeks.  It's really hard to eat, I've always based my eating on how hungry I am.  Well, now I realize this is a bad idea while pregnant, I've only gained 1 pound this past month so that makes it 3 pounds gained over the last 8 weeks (I'm 33+ weeks and I started out with a low-normal BMI) and the baby is measuring small.  I'm going to start supplementing my diet with protein shakes too like @minibean16 suggested.

All of this. I never want food and when I do I feel so full from it, I usually have to throw up to "relieve" the fullness. Blah.

  • I'm having another one of these days. Now that I think about it, I've been feeling this way for almost two weeks. I told MH tonight that it feels like the first trimester all over again, but now I get full so much faster. And I know if I eat even a little too much, I risk throwing up.
  • Yeah, my "dinner" tonight? Two boxes of chocolate milk. This will probably be the only time in my life I won't feel guilty about that. I've actually started trying to consume higher calorie foods lately just to make sure baby is getting enough calories to keep growing. After gaining quickly early on, now I'm actually worried about making sure I don't fall below my recommended weight gain.

If anyone here has tips or tricks that help them get food down easier, I'm all ears!
