XP from Infertility: Antagonist vs long-lupron protocol

We are switching from the antagonist to the long-lupron protocol for IVF # 2.  With the antagonist protocol everything looked good until day 5 post ER.  We had one low grade blast, 4 morulas, and 4 embryos that had arrested.  So, we are switching to the long-lupron protocol in hopes of improving embryo quality.  Did anyone have better quality embryos after switching protocols?  Did that result in your BFP?  I'm hoping to find some success stories.  :)

Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

  • I had a much better cycle from IVF 1 to IVF 2 after switching protocols.  I did the long lupron first and had 8 retrieved.  All 8 fertilized but we had none of those make it to blast  by day 5. We had none to freeze.

The second round, we retrieved 12, 10 fertilized and 5 of them made it to blast on day 5.  We transfered 2 and got a BFP that cycle (we miscarried at 5w) and froze 3.  From our frozen cycle, I am currently pregnant with two little blasts.

We definitely got a better outcome from switching protocols.

  • I was on a different protocol for my second IVF cycle and we had much better results, however for me it was a change from Lupron to Antagonist. The number of  mature eggs retrieved was not that much different (10 vs. 16) but the first cycle we only had one blast (BFN) and the second we had seven blasts (BFP).

So who knows - maybe we just got really lucky the second cycle, but I (and my doctor) really think that the change in protocol made the difference. I seemed to respond much better to one than the other. Hopefully that is the case for you too. Good luck!

  • Thank you for sharing your experiences.  It seems that switching protocols helped.  I'm switching the other way around, but hopefully it works for me.
