Paci Addictions

My lo has a paci addiction. Cannot sleep without it. I'm so not against paci use as DD #1 had one until she was three. Mostly because she wasn't really dependent as a baby. DD #2 cannot fall asleep without it. Not a chance.

When do we break this habit and how? I'm assuming I should wait a little longer. She seriously would not fall asleep without it.

Re: Paci Addictions

  • DD is not a huge fan of the paci.. she will take it when I give it to her but usually will spit it out after a while.

I had read somewhere, a while back, that if you cut a small slit in the paci then the baby will reject it because the sensation is different - no idea if this is right or wrong in how to go about breaking the habbit

Came across this website the other day and it talks about a recommended time to break the habit. Hope it helps!

  • DS 1 was the same way. He slept great though because he would wake find his paci pop in is mouth and fall right back asleep without making a peep. I took it away just before his 1st birthday. A couple of sleepiness nights later and he never missed it!

A gf of mine cut it down little by little for a few weeks and her dd didn't want anymore. Her dd was around 2 when she did that.

  • Ok yes... I did the slit thing with DD #1. I'm just worried that this one already can't sleep without it and we are popping it back in all the time!

  • We broke DS from his at 15 months. DD actually doesn't seem to care much for a paci. She'll take it for a little bit and then spit it back out.

  • I cut the nipple off of DDs pacifier at 12 months old. I gave it to her first thing after her nap like that, telling her it was broken. She only used it for falling asleep, so she didn't really care at first. When bedtime came around, it took 45 minutes to get her to sleep, and that was that! No issues falling asleep after that one time.

I tried taking it away at 7 months old, and she jut wasn't ready. We went 3 weeks pacifier free, but she screamed bloody murder for 15-30 minutes before falling asleep for those 3 weeks. I decided it was too early. 12 months was the perfect time for us.

  • Dd just decided one day she was done. I actually tried giving to her and she refused. I was afraid she would take her brothers and start using it again but she just always tries to give it to him

  • We have this issue too. Tried to break it (the habit) and she would scream until she fell asleep then wake up halfway through her nap and couldn't go back to sleep. Then at night she screamed for an hour and a half until I finally gave in and gave it to her. I'm just praying she either learns to soothe herself with her hands or learns to put the paci back in on her own real quick so I can sleep at night and in the same bed as DH again.
  • I wouldn't worry about breaking the habit right now. DS#1 NEEDED the paci to fall asleep. God forbid we ever lost/couldn't find one. Around age 1 we made sure he ONLY had access to it at nap/bedtime. Never during awake hours. I was dreading taking it from him so we delayed a long time. Around 2.5 I cut the tip of it. He was old enough at that point that he said "uh-oh, it's broken." I said "yup, guess we should throw it's away." He said ok and went and threw it away himself. Never looked back.
