XP: Would you take Sudafed or Mucinex DM? (another poll)

edited September 2014 in Parenting
XP from my BMB. I know y'all love hearing from me about this night. You're welcome.

So, I am having my much-anticipated night off tonight, and need some advice. DS still nurses a bit at night, and I don't want to be leaking milk all over Cute Dad's sheets tonight! I have heard that the ingredients in Sudafed and Mucinex DM can cause a dip in milk supply. If you were going to take one of these for that reason, which would you take? I have very mild allergies right now, so I have no dire need to take any meds at all, and want to avoid feeling drugged up.

This is probably flammable, eh?

  • I would be worried that alcohol and sudafed would make me really sleepy

  • I would say Mucinex, as Sudafed tends to make me sleepy.  Both seem to have the ability to dry you up, but I would be more worried about how I feel while taking it.  Cold medicines tend to make me feel disconnected.

  • Have you ever taken either one? I only ask because mixed with alcohol could result in weirdness. Sudafed winds me up, dm makes me tired. Those drugs are different for everyone. Can you pump beforehand, or maybe during? It's not ideal, but I think I'd prefer that to trying meds for the first time.
I used to take Mucinex a lot, but I haven't taken either in a very long time. I generally avoid OTC meds, so you make a really good point.

I will probably just pump/hand express and rely on the alcohol to decrease supply, as well. Damn, I was hoping for a magic bullet ;)

  • SS:  I'd just sleep in a bra in case - but you probably won't leak. Even though DS still nurses at night I found that in the 2nd year of BFing that didn't really happen with either kid, your body is more of a on-demand milk machine at that point.
AND I'd pick up some "No more milk tea" it'll give you a temporary dip, but not cause the crazy effects with alcohol
Where can I get this tea?! That's exactly what I need haha

Is it the Traditional Medicinals brand?
