Trouble TTC

N3TR - GTKY: Tell me about your hair and the products you use!

I've been a little obsessed with my hair for the last few weeks. Mostly because I can't decide if I want to chop it or keep it long. I like it long, and so does DH, but it'd be soo much easier for work if I cut it short. It's curly and the back is past my shoulders, but I have some shorter layers in the front. If you know about curly hair types it's probably a "2C" curl. Recently started using Organix Moroccan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner and Organix Kukui Oil Curl Cream. I very rarely blow dry it, usually just air dry it. It frizzes up like crazy (not as bad with the Organix), have tons of baby hairs, and I can probably make a wig with the amount that falls out every time I wash it!

So what about you ladies??

Re: N3TR - GTKY: Tell me about your hair and the products you use!

  • My hair is REALLY curly and frizzes easily, plus I live in the Deep South and it's humid. I use to get keratin treatments but had to stop bc of preg/mc and fertility treatments. Now I found this AWESOME product, Deva Curl. I use the no poo shampoo, one conditioner, gel and I had bought the anti frizz sample pack and I use all of it.

The shampoo is so gentle I can wash my hair almost every day if I wanted to without drying it out. Although I still only wash it 1-2 times a week. The gel helps my curls hold their shape, mine are like cork screws but they are still soft. I either dry my hair naturally or with a diffuser, it just take forever to dry because it's thick and prob half way down my back straight but maybe to my neck line curly.

I feel like a sales person but honestly in 40 years I've never found a product that worked as good on my curly hair.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I tried the Deva Curl Low Poo and I couldn't stand it ... I felt like I could not get my hair clean with it. It was weird washing with something that had very little suds in it. I think I just couldn't get over that and felt like it wasn't clean. It would have probably been worse with the No Poo one had I tried that one instead.

  • My hair is longish...down to my shoulder blades in the back. It's very thick and wavy. Air drying is absolutely not an option. I straighten it every single day so my chi is my best friend. I use Redken Smooth Lock shampoo to protect against heat damage.

Other than that, I am a sucker for Big Sexy Hair products....I use the blow dry volumizing gel, spray and play hair spray and back comb in a bottle.

  • @iPutKetchuponKetchup I went to a stylist who specializes in curly hair and they recommended it. It was a few years ago. The organix shampoo I've been using for the last couple of weeks is sulphate free and has natural surfactants to make it sudsy. It doesn't seem as frizzy as when I was using regular shampoo.

That's what I love about the no poo. It's like washing it with conditioner. I looked up the 2b/c and my hair is actually curlier, especially underneath, prob in the 3a curl area especially after I walk outside. My top layer may be in the 2, of course I can't have a head of hair that's the same everywhere. My hair is extremely dry because it's so curly and I really shouldn't be washing it at all, just rinsing it good and conditioner on the ends. So the No poo is actually perfect for my hair. I'm also use to the no sulfate shampoo because you can't have it when you have Keratin treatments. I haven't felt suds in my hair for years.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • My hair is wavy and has volume only when my hair is cut about 2 inches from my shoulders, any longer and my waves get weighed down. I chopped my hair off after my divorce and had NO idea my hair even had volume!

I use Dr. Bronner's Castile soap diluted with water and sometimes I add essential lavender oil. It keeps my hair grease free for 2 days. I also have some low chemical, organic shampoo from Whole Foods that only allows me to go one day with out shampoo so I prefer the castile soap. I tried the baking soda and apple cider vinegar method for a month and it made my scalp super dry and flaky, so I stopped using it.

  • My hair is short and thin and oily. I hate it. I use lots of Big Sexy Hair stuff which helps me not hate it sometimes.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • So much thick curly hair on this board! I've always wanted my hair to be curlier than it is. Naturally it's fine and wavy in a way that never looks good, so I usually either straighten it or curl it. I also have tons of it, and again, it's really fine, so it tangles ALL THE TIME. Once it gets a few inches past my shoulders the waves start looking amazing and I can pretty much start letting it air dry, but I usually can't stand my hair that long for very long before I chop it off to my chin. I use aveda damage remedy shampoo and conditioner every damn day (it's not damaged, although I do dye it, I just got hooked on damage remedy back when I was dyeing it super blonde and refuse to give it up). I wish I could only wash my hair twice a week! But it gets pretty darn oily. I'll usually push it to every other day in the winter, but I can't get away with that in the summer.

  • My hair makes me so mad! I've always had skin/hair issues that I think are related to Crohn's (they flare when I get flares). Basically if I try to moisturize as deeply as it needs, the scalp gets greasy/dandruffy and my hair looks flat and stringy. Then if I try to keep it more clean/clarified, my scalp gets dry-flaky and my hair instantly looks dry, coarse, fluffy and frizzy. My skin is the same way, I have dry flaking skin but when I moisturize deeply enough to solve the dryness, I am covered in bumps and pimples.

There is no solution, I've tried everything. So I have found the closest thing to acceptable results comes from washing only once per 5 days, but using intense conditioner. And no styling products, every one either makes me greasy or dried out. And for my face, well I just try to have a balance of a little dry flakiness and a little bit of acne. -_-

So everyday my long (to keep it weighed down a bit), huge and fluffy yet totally undamaged hair (I never use heat or permanent color), with lots of random curl underneath but never anything but straight on top (ugh), looks barely presentable. Tried a bob for a few years but having to blowdry every 2-3 days caused so much damage it thinned out on top but was still so huge and thick everywhere else.

OK, rant over, back to accepting myself the way I am and focusing on inner beauty, Lol! :)

@sweetieshellieh The hair in your wedding picture is soo gorgeous! I hope you'll be able to keep enjoying it the way you like it, but if you need a break from the time commitment, have fun, it's hair so it will grow back! :)

  • I also have long, curly/wavy/frizzy hair.  I haven't found a shampoo I love yet, but thinking of giving the Deva Curl stuff you ladies use a shot.  I do love the garnier fructis deep conditioning mask.  Nothing gets the knots out like that.  Unfortunately because of gym time I usually do have to wash my hair every day.

Is the Deva Curl like Wen products because I tried those and hated them - made my hair feel all greasy!

As for product, I actually love Carols Daughter products to control my curls, paticularly their hair balm.  You used to only be able to get it at certain stores but now it's sold at Target.  A little of that balm on my towel dried hair gives my curls some better definition and keep sthe frizz under control.

  • It is interesting to see so many curly hair ladies here! I myself have a newly developed head of 4A/4B curly q's since I stopped using the creamy crack (aka relaxers) once we prepped for cycling (Nov 2013).

I am STILL trying to figure out what to do with this head of mine. I'm completely intrigued by this hair texture that I have not seen since I was 11 (Thanks Mom). But as of now, I am still looking for products that will work on my transitioning hair, so you will get no recs from me. I tried Wen once (my mom bought it for me). My natural hair seemed to really like it, but my still relaxed hair was not a fan. So I kept it to use when I finally cut off the relaxed bit of my hair.

So for now, I use Dove Deep Moisture Shampoo like once a week to get rid of the products of the week, and deep condition 2x/week with Dove Deep Moisture Conditioner. Nothing fancy, and really cheap at BJ's.
  • @sha259 I use the Dove deep moisture shampoo also, it seems to get hair clean with the least amount of dryness! :)

@amylev80 I used the Nexus heat protectant spray for blowdrying when I had a bob, and thought it worked great. Hopefully it does the trick for you. :)

Think I am inspired to try some new products...it's always such a failure though! Does anyone have a styling product that they feel doesn't dry out OR grease up their hair?

  • I have a head of thick straight as an arrow hair- prone to be oily.  I keep it Pixie cut rather short (think Anne Hathaway).  I use organix moroccan oil shampoo and I condition with the moroccan oil condition maybe once a week depending on how it feels. I use Aveda control paste to style with.  Totally jealous of all you curly hair ladies.

  • My hair is somewhere between 3A and 3B and super thick. When I was in high my friends used to see how many little bits of paper they could throw into my giant hair before I noticed :) I think I have tried everything but Deva Curl, I'll have to try it, I'm getting bored with my Bed Head products! When. I straighten it I use a ton of Redken products, I can't even remember what they are all called. I typically go through about a flat iron a year, so I finally bought a GHD with a lifetime warranty.

  • My hair sounds just like @lindy04aggie‌ .. It's so thin and straight.. Doesn't hold a curl for more than an hour and has no volume. I don't use anything special, but I make sure I put some volumizing mousse in it before I blow dry it. The one good thing about having such straight hair is that I can half ass blow dry and be out the door in 10 min.

I always let it get wet and use conditioner but don't wash with shampoo. My hair is really dry so I have to condition all the time but only wash a few times a week.
I was wondering that too. I wash my hair probably every 3 days or so but always wear a shower cap when I'm not washing it. Seems like I might have to try the condition only thing and see if that makes a difference!
