TTC after 35

Ladies that workout (NTTC related)

What do you wear for your workouts? This could be a dumb question but I will ask it anyway because I know there are women out there trying to work on their health too, right?

I'm trying out a walk-5K app - it's basically showing me just how out of shape I am, but I'm trying.  But this whole "run" aspect is new to me (and let's be honest it's just a jog right now, but still it's harder work than I'm used to).  I've invested in some good sports bras but am thinking I need some new workout clothes. Yesterday's sweatpants and old tshirt seemed stifling.

Are there particular fabrics or styles or brands that you recommend?   Any recs for us plus sized ladies?

Also - are there any shirts that have a little bit of control to them? I've come to rely very heavily on my spanx and feel naked - and overly jiggly - without it.

  • I just started working out and I bought some stuff at kohls and old navy.
Get a few pairs of the long tight pants. I first got a shorter pair and my inner thighs were rubbing together as I ran- not fun. I have lost over 30 lbs this year so I'm trying to tone up now.
They make tank style shirts that have a sports bra built in and the tank part is on the flowy side so it hides a lot. My middle is still a little on the fluffy side. Start with a few pieces and go from there.
Find something that is comfortable for you so you keep it up.
Good for you for starting to get healthy. I did it and I feel amazing now!!!!!

  • I do the elliptical at the gym- easier on my knees.  I lost 40 lbs from January to May and I've maintained since then.  I started out in leggings and long oversized tshirts with a sports bra underneath.  For summer though I moved into tanks... just because I do more now and it keeps me cooler.  I've come to realize that nobody's really looking at me anyway and my gym isn't that crowded when I am there so I'm less self conscious now.

  • My adivce would be to stay away from cotton, because it absorbs sweat and just holds it there against your skin. Some kind of technical fabric will wick sweat away from your body, which will decrease chafing and increase your level of enjoyment (or toleration, depending on how much you like working out...) :)

My favourite gym pants are from MPG. They're super comfortable and pretty stylin' to boot, I think.

Well done on the foray into fitness! I'm something of a newcomer myself, and after taking some weeks mostly off over August and September, I need to get back on track!

  • I agree with the other ladies. Long yoga paints and t-shirts. Try kohl's old navy or target. Kohl's might be best because of their coupons. As you keep doing it you'll need smaller sizes (or drawstring waists) Also I am very conscious of my arm jiggle si I'd I'm going to do arm exercises or a class I will wear long sleeve cotton or dry fit t-shirts. Just for my own sanity

  • I'm seconding @tmorash that I stay away from anything cotton, especially on the bottom, when running.  I like the pants from Old Navy because they do help hold you in, keep the sweat contained and the price is right if you catch a great sale.  They also have super cute tanks that are much more generous in the middle area.  my other suggestion would be to check places like Marshall's and TJ Maxx to find higher end brand names at a better price.  Good luck with your new program.  Just remember to keep going and that every runner has a bad "running day" so don't give up!
  • Thank you for the advice and the words of encouragement. A few years ago I had success with weight loss but it has since crept back on and so it's time to get back on track.  It's funny how good it feels when you work out, but how quick you forget that.

  • Thirding the advice RE: 100% cotton. Ouch!

I am a LOT heavier these days than I've ever been before, and recently got a bunch of decent stuff from Target. Then again, I've never been a clothes horse and I'm kind of in an "eh--it's not like I'm gonna look super hot anyway" kind of place, so there might be much nicer stuff out there that I'm too lazy to look for.

  • I do cardio at the gym or walk.  I love the yoga pants and ditto the Target brands.  I have had more success with those than Kohls in that they don't show VPLs.  I can't stand having those, especially when the workout shirt I'm wearing rides up above my butt.

  • I like Old Navy for sport bras - they aren't expensive but are very supportive and last a long time!

I usually wear a more form-fitting bottom (think capris or leggings) because I don't want extra fabric around my legs, and a tank top.

  • Being a large-chested woman, a tank with a built-in "bra" just doesn't cut it for me.  If you need something supportive, you simply can't rely on Old Navy and Target - you've got to shell out the cash.  I have found that the Moving Comfort "Juno" and the Lululemon "Ta-ta Tamer" are the only ones that really support me enough to be comfortable.

Now, once I've spent $65 a pop on my sports bras, I will then buy cheap-o workout pants and tanks from Old Navy and Target to balance out my expenditure.  :-)

  • @bearfootz

I love the compressed workout pants from Old Navy. They fit perfect and are super comfy. I'm not big chested but I know I need to invest in more sports bras because I hate it when I'm running and my bra straps start falling down!

Best of luck on your weight loss journey. I also just started walking ... to jogging .. and now I can call it running. I've lost 36lbs since last November. Working on toning up now. ;)

  • @ewenner I'm the same way! Spend TONS on sports bras, drool over lululemon (not that I'd fit in it right now ) and end up buying all my other workout gear at target on sale or on clearance!
  • I am happy with the Glamourise (sp?) no bounce camisole bra that I got from Kohls online, they had a G cup.  It's supportive, comfortable, and not such a uniboob that other sports bras cause.
