Sippy Cup Help

Hi!

My son has been using this sippy cup ( https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Click-Count-Sippy-ounce/dp/B006WHR6CU/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1410786757&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=munchikn+sippy+cup ) and doctor told me it is the equivalent to a bottle and he is 2.5 years old.  So we need to switch him to straws, but he isn't liking them (he is used to tilting his head back to drink) or they leak and I don't like that.  So anyone have suggestions on a straw cup that may not leak and that he may like?

Thank you!

Re: Sippy Cup Help

  • We have used these from Target and I haven't had any issues with them leaking or spilling.

  • I had the same problem with using the straw cups because he'd always tip it way back and then get mad when no drink was coming out.

What helped him learn was just by using a regular cup (no lid) with a bendy straw.  I had to hold on to it for awhile until he learned that he couldn't pick it up....  but then he got used to tilting his head down to drink instead of tilting the cup up.  After doing that a few times, now he's much better using the straw sippy cups on his own.

  • Great info Mommies, keep the tips coming!
  • I just buy the take and toss cups and use a regular straw, open cups, or a water bottle.  I have found that straw cups that do not leak are incredibly difficult to drink from because of the no spill valve.  If you eat at a restaurant can he use a kid cup from there?  I would let him learn to use it and not concentrate on the leak part personally.
  • Thanks Again!  He can drink from a regular straw, it's my craziness w/ leaks and he desire to lay down and drink which doesn't work w/ straws (except the zoli cup) or just an open cup.  We are going to keep trying.  I have the take and toss w/ the sippy top and the straw kind are on it's way from Amazon, so we will see how he does.

Now I know better if we go for baby 2, just go straight for the straw!

  • We use these ones: https://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=17198326&mr:filter=91332656303&gclid=CjwKEAjwqO-gBRCEyp2Fufm0lBASJAAZrX-54CqipmmC5WcFTpEi2UdJ-VCBRb0FSNT0K4FXDaw4DhoCA0Xw_wcB&mr:match=&KPID=14621950&mr:keyword=&CAMP=PLAPPC-_-PID14621950&mr:ad=46466064983&SOURCE=CAPLA_DF:17198326:TRUSCA&CAGPSPN=pla_14621950&overrideStore=TRUSCA&mr:device=c&mr:adType=pla

I find they don't leak (at least as long as the straw and valve are all together) and LO likes them.

Our LO had a hard time for a while with tipping the cup up all the time too. I just made sure to remind her that she needs to keep the bottom down (while gently pushing down on the bottom so she would actually get something) and she eventually caught on.

We also bought these cups: https://www.amazon.com/Sassy-Count-Purple-Orange-Ounce/dp/B0062BVY42

LO LOVED them but I found they didn't last very long. But if he likes tipping them up that's a good option! (The rubber "valve" comes off the lid so you can wash it, and one of our cups leaks now. When I looked at it it looks like the valve got bent out of shape a bit and isn't tight anymore.) Honestly though, they are awesome cups and we are probably going to go back to them soon as LO is starting to want to drink out of her 'big girl' cup all the time.
  • I agree with the take and toss cups with straws.  The other fancy ones with straws are such a pain to clean, too many parts.  I have found they leak less than the other types also.

I use the Take N Toss cups, too.  They're cheap.  I don't want to spend a lot of money on cups and I hate all the parts and clicking them open and closed and threading straws through, etc.  I just don't worry about leaks much and my kids don't drink laying down.  I would discourage that. We try to keep most of our drinking in the kitchen and breakfast room.  It took my younger one a bit to learn not to tip the regular straw cup after transitioning from a sippy spout, but he got it.  He is 2 years and 1 month old and interchanges between lidded straw cup or open cup at home to open cup at day care (no sippy cups allowed in his class, they require them to use small disposable open cups) just fine.  It just took a little practice.  He will also drink straight from a water bottle (screw on lid).  My older one probably wouldn't do that, but he has ASD and getting him to accept different cups is a work in progress (he uses Take N Toss straw).  Because of DS1's issues I purposely mix up cups with DS2 so he doesn't get used to the same thing all the time and will be more flexible.
