I think family only birthday parties for school age kid's are sad.
If the kid wants a school party I agree but not all kids do. Neither of my kids have wanted classroom parties.  I have asked/offered.  Little freaks

Same.  I have offered to invite her classmates EVERY year since grade K (and have even encouraged it and told her how fun it would be) and she wants no part of it. She wants family and just a few closer friends from her class (so like 3-4 kids, maybe). That's it. I figure at her age she can decide, so I go with it.  And she has a blast at her parties.  She's more of a "best friend" girl vs having a ton of friends she's not as closer to her, so this is probably why. (I'm the same way).  In general, however, I agree.
That's totally fine. I'm talking about the people who do family only and don't offer friends. They're out there. Trust me.

I'm not having a big birthday party for either boy this fall.

Plan one was to combine them since their birthdays are so close, but DH's travel schedule got more and more insane, and he is basically OOT five weeks between now and Thanksgiving, including weekends.  That many weekends off the table, and all the other assort fall shit going on, and going away over Coloumbus Day, and it was never going to happen.

So Chuck E. Cheese with us and the grandparents it is.

My FFC I won't save until tomorrow -- I'm probably going to change the venue to Dave and Busters, because beer.
I think Chuck E Cheese serves beer, although I don't know what kind.  I have never been to Dave and Busters, maybe they have more variety.
Not in the greater Philadelphia area -- trust me I have visited them all!  But they used to!
I wish we had a Dave and Busters. L and I went to the one in Times Square this summer...she was blown away.

You're an idiot if you pay full price at kohls.
You're a fool if you think you are ever getting a good deal at Kohls. Everyone knows they raise their prices to put shit on sale.
I don't think I'm getting a deal per say but I do like going back and spending my kohls cash. I have $10 that I intend to spend on a shirt for DD.
Oh I think I get deals.  lol

My last sneakers I got there were Asics and I paid $32 dollars. I could not get those anywhere else for that price.  Again, it's not 60% off BUT it is still cheaper.

It's like my grocery store.  They have Buy 1 get 2 free weeks on food.  There prices are jacked up so olive oil is $10 a bottle but I am getting 3 bottles for $10 and 3.34 a bottle is a great price for olive oil.

you do realize that a lot of those brands are items specifically made for that store right? So while the price is lower so is the quality compared to an ASIC you would buy at a running store.
Are you sure?  I see my same model sneaker (same color, name etc) for $40 at Olympia.  I also still get the same manufacturer warranty. They seem to last me a couple years as well. I don't think spending an extra $8 at Olympia will do anything additional for me.

They also sell the original carters clothes and not the cheap knock offs that Target has.

And the cheap knock-offs at Target actually turn out to be more expensive than using a bunch of coupons at Kohls.

Another UO: I think Target is way overpriced for the quality of their kids clothes. Sometimes I like their clothes, but once I see the price I pass it by because I can buy something similar with a much better quality for cheaper.  I think I am doing it wrong because there is a lot of love for Target clothes for kids.
Yeah I get lots of t-shirts there for Joey for $3-4 and they've never worn out before being outgrown.  I like their Cieco stuff for playclothes.
This is why I think I am doing it wrong.  I never find those deals there, but lots of people do.

Check out their sale flyers they have these deals at least once a month.
  • I only go into Kohls because they send me those $10 off $10 coupons in the mail. I got a shirt and pants fir DS for $4 total yesterday. It's also right next to swim lessons. I'm not sure I would go if I wasn't right there anyway.

I'm drawing such a blank today. I'm trying to come up with a uo, but got nothing so far.

  • I need to get this cartwheel thing.  Unfortunately I am still rocking the flip phone :-(  I think you need to be able to bring the app in or print something out, and that is a real PITA since I also have a super old printer that won't work with my new computer.  Looks like I need to spend a couple hundred dollars on electronics, so I can save money on clothes!

  • I don't consider shopping or strip clubs dates.
  • Mine is I like BF shopping. We hardly ever buy anything. DD sleeps over at IL's house. We get up earlier than normal to go look around. We hardly ever buy anything so it's not like we have to go shopping. I just like being out, watching people walk around buying stuff and being part of a big crowd with my hot cocoa on a cold winter morning. I just like overall feel of it.

  • I love Kohls, but usually shop the clearance, etc.  I watch the prices to make sure it is actually cheaper.  I do not find as many clothes that I like there for the boys as they get older.  I am not a huge fan of the Jumping beans line, but I did find a few cute things for DS3 this summer.

I love the Osh Kosh line at Target and sometimes the Cherokee, but I usually don't buy it unless it is on clearance because of price and quality.  Again, not a fan of their clothes for older boys.

DS has rarely had homework so far (he is in second grade), except for reading.  And I love that.

I am ok with teens/tweens having smart phones. For safety.  I think that is one of the only ways I will feel better about them going off on their own.  I do agree on the upfront monitoring.

DH loves to go shopping on Black Friday with me.  We usually end up going out on Thanksgiving evening/night since we have nothing else to do.  We are not early risers.

I do think there is such a thing as skinny shaming.  I have experienced it.  I won't speak as to whether it is as bad as fat shaming because I haven't experienced that.  Please don't accuse me of bragging.  : )  However, even as mostly a lurker for years, I have seen this issue come up before on this board with this poster.

Here is my unpopular opinion: I don't have a Facebook account.  I have one for my work, but I don't have a personal one and neither does DH.  I have recently thought about getting one because all my sisters, etc. have one, but I have held out so long, I feel like this would be giving in.  Also, what if no one wants to be my friend?  : )

I will however get my kids the most hideous, silly looking one they want when the time comes.

  • I don't get why there is so much judgment about where people spend their money. Calling people idiots for shopping at Kohl's? Buying second hand clothes when you can afford new? Hokay.

I don't even like Kohl's, so I'm not offended by that, I just think it's really stupid that people care so much.
I'm with you. If your kids are fed and appropriately clothed and your bills are paid, you can flush money down the toilet for all I care.

No I don't think you are an idiot for shopping at kohls like I said I have done it. I think you are an idiot if the reason you shop there is because you buy their "sales" crap.

I like phones for tweens and teens too. I can't tell you how many times my mom would've forgotten me at school had I not had a freaking phone. She forgot even when I did have one, so it was nice to be able to call and remind her.

omg you are so young. We did not have anything close to cell phone when I was in HS and somehow we all managed.

    Anyone remember the bag phones?
    I'm looking at you @iheartthe80s
    :)]

I wouldn't have cared. I didn't ask for one and it wasn't for texting. Just merely to call and remind my mom that she had forgotten me....again :p

  • I don't get taking a picture of your kid's art work so you can throw it out. If you are going to all that trouble to take picture, print and then make them into a book why not just keep it in the first place?

Here kiddo, it's a picture of a picture. Huh?
Um because a rainbow on a huge sheet up paper takes up a lot more room than a picture. Seriously my kinder kid comes home with crap everyday I don't have the space. But then most of it I just throw away without a picture gasp!

Oh and I think it irritates me so much because to me it is false marketing and people buy it.
  • I can count on my hands how many times I had a friend birthday party. It wasn't much. I'm not scarred. My birthday is near Thanksgiving, which makes the weather in ND very unpredictable.

One time we couldn't have my aunts and uncles come because we had 3 feet of snow and were snowed in. I was super bummed.

So most of the time, we had family only parties on Thanksgiving. And you know what? I loved it. And yes, I did have friends.

I will probably have some friend parties for my kids. Once they are school aged, that is.

Mobile right now. Google homecoming mums
  • Oh my 8th grade homecoming mum was AMAZING!!!
  • @jensriot‌ this is for you

Ugly as hell, but I would've killed for one in high school. Mine looked like the baby offspring of those monstrosities. But that was all my mom could afford. My kids will have to tow theirs in wagons...j/k. .maybe.

  • The mums are worn the day of homecoming and to the game that night. Around here, boys give them to the girls. When I grew up parents got them, not the date. It must be a southern thing. Although, I moved to AZ halfway through my junior year. They did not do mums.

  • It's a giant fake (mostly) mums surrounded by ribbon with ribbon hanging from the bottom with all sorts of gawdawful stuff attached. Some even have full size stuffed animals on them. All done in school colors of course. They get so heavy, the girls hang them around their necks. Mine was small enough to be pinned to my shirt :(

  • I had my pinned on my shirt back in the day. I wish I could find a pic of it. My mom was so pissed at the cost, still remember that.
  • Okay, so what I'm googling looks like it's a corsage gone wild. How wild depends on the person? That's interesting! It definitely wasn't done in NJ, at least in my part. But then even the homecoming game brought very few spectators. People went to the dance that night but nobody bothered going to the game.

  • I never heard of mums either. We didn't do that in GA and to this day I still can't figure out exactly what they are/what their purpose is.

When A goes to school, I will be throwing a lot of her art stuff away and I don't feel bad about it.

My mom drug out a HUGE container this past Christmas of school shit the she had kept from me and my two brothers. I looked at hey like she had grown a second head and said, "Why the fuck do you have all this?!?" I had to help her de-clutter her attic and closet because she just keeps too much crap. No mom, I do not want my panties from when I was 5.

She didn't actually keep panties, I'm over exaggerating ;)
