TTC after 35

Thoughts on CM

So I am wondering if I should try guaifenesin (Robitussin) this month? I have really not had EWCM in the last 2 cycles. My challenge is that I get idiopathic hives if I don't stay on an antihistamine regimen so I take 5 - 10 mg daily depending on how my hives are acting and I know that can dry up mucus. I have been doing this for years and some months my CM is abundant, but I did specifically notice it was lacking the last 2 months. Last month it was pretty much watery the entire time from CD6-CD16. What are your thoughts?

Re: Thoughts on CM

  • I seem to really fluctuate too.  I have not tried Robitussin personally but seen it mentioned here and there.  Have you tried Preseed? We have that but a little goes a long way and it can be too umm, slippery.
  • Lol. No, I thought about buying some, but it really only became an issue (that I noticed) the last 2 months. I was trying to think back to see if I changed a behavior or dietary habit, but nothing is coming to mind.

  • I used it when ttc my older boys but used preseed with my last ttc efforts.  I am having less noticeable cm, but when I do an internal check I find enough to determine if its fertile or not.  For now I'm going with that.  I don't know of any reason why it would be harmful though.
  • From what I've been told, and experienced when I tried it, it this or your EWCM, to be more watery. "Less hostile and easier for the sperm to swim through"

  • I've tried it. I didn't notice it helping that much, but I dont think it can hurt.

Preseed might be another good way to counteract the antihistamines, as well as staying nice and hydrated, of course...

  • I have been taking Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) and that has definitely improved my EWCM, which was essentially non-existent before I started taking the EPO.  I've never tried the Robitussin trick.

  • @ewenner‌ how does EPO work?

@Davie813 also took EPO (if I remember correctly). I almost started taking it, but I get weird about supplements.

@meredithcarole: FWIW, I believe that users are not supposed to take EPO during the LP.

I get kind of weird about supplements, too. Maybe I will try the cough syrup this month and do a little research on the other....

  • meredithcarole - I read about some ladies on here that were taking EPO, and then I Googled it a bunch to learn what I could.  This website has some info about how it works:
URMySunshine77 is correct, you shouldn't take it after ovulation.  I take it from CD1 until my temp spike.  Also, I only take 1000 mg daily, even though the dose recommended on the bottle says to take 3000 mg, but it still is enough to improve my EWCM.

  • I did take EPO.  It helped.  I think the mechanism is that it increases estrogen, so many people are leery of that.  That's not why I stopped, though.  I stopped because I came to the conclusion that my problem was just age and egg quality and optimizing the incidentals (e.g. CM) was probably not going to make a difference.

For you younger ladies, though, it's obviously a different story. :)
