TTC after 35

Why is my BBT freaking out like this?

Hi gals!  I'm wondering what's going on with my BBT... I'm on CD12 (of what will I'm sure be another long cycle), but my BBT is freaking out.  I am not temping any differently than last cycle (this is my second cycle temping) but literally I'm on a roller coaster!  Most of them are way too high for follicular phase.  I'm not sick, and my sleep and temp time is the same as last cycle.  I've been stressed out a bunch with work, but I mean I think I was last cycle too.  I'm only worried b/c if it stays this high, I'll never know if I ovulated (I'm charting for a few months before seeing an RE and looks like my first chart I did O (although I missed BD'ing over those days).  Any thoughts?  FF link in siggy.

Re: Why is my BBT freaking out like this?

  • When you are stressed, you may *think* you are sleeping well, but I guarantee you that you are really not getting a ton of REM quality sleep. I was super stressed last cycle (wedding planning), and my cycle was a hot mess. I hope it evens out for you soon, and your stress calms.

  • If you have super long cycle, maybe you temp will drop for a while before O. I'm not a total expert so others feel free to chime in, but I think FF just looks for a drop and then a rise maybe a .05 minimum. So maybe your LP temp difference will not be as high. Is there a too high temp for your LP phase? I had not heard about that.

  • I can't see your chart on mobile, but what @lgsdesigner‌ says sounds reasonable. I also agree with @lcwed‌ that your unusual temps won't necessarily stop FF from picking up a temp shift after ovulation. I'm definitely not an expert either, though...

    Good luck!

  • I would say what the others said is reasonable. It looks like you didn't temp until you were a couple weeks in last cycle so it is also possible that this might be normal for you. Have you bought Wondfo OPKs so you can do heavy testing there?

  • Agree with pp's.  First, if you are a week+ away from typical O your temps have time to drop and level out, second even with high (97.5+) fp temps a thermal shift will be recognized by ff, it just may take more than 3 days of an uptick... check out my chart for wacky temp patterns.  My crosshairs have just this morning changed from cd15 to cd17 for O.  I tend to think I actually O'd on d15, but I'm not going to override ff.

I hope you are able to get some sound sleep and relax with concern for temps.  Of course the last thing I'll say and this is more of a reminder to me than to you is that it is normal for our bbt to be a little higher and rocky as we age... just think of it as a challenge and exciting rather than worrisome- I know easier said than done, but really thinking negatively helps in NO way.

    Best wishes!
  • In temping/charting, it's not about 'how' high your temps are, it's about the overall pattern. Yes, your temps are a bit rocky, but it's nothing to panic about. When I was temping I always had super jagged temps through my follicular phase, but still could always pinpoint my ovulation once it happened. When you ovulate, your temps might still even be rocky, but they will on average be rocky at a higher level than pre-O temps. Just stick with it and try not to get sucked into over analyzing every single temp. Keep in mind that FF and temping is all about patterns over the course of the entire cycle.

  • If you look at my chart this cycle, it looks exactly like yours for the first 10 days or so.  Then it stabilized a bit and FF was able to detect O (and it lined up with a +OPK)  Just hang in there and keep temping.

  • @tlc35 your chart makes me feel better. I guess I just didn't realize that pre LP your bbt could be so high. Prob bc my temps last cycle were so low I used that as a benchmark. I shall relax, and yes I do have a heaping pike of OPKs that I'm going to start using tomorrow. Thanks everyone.

  • As everyone else said, FF looks at patterns not individual days, mine are always spiky because I am a mouth breather so my temps do vary (open mouth low temp, close mouthhiger temp) but it still finds my O when I do O!
