Anyone care to share their induction stories?

Admitted to L&D 6 hours ago to start the induction process due to my gestational diabetes. I have the feeling I'm going to be here for quite a while. Anyone care to tell me how their experiences went? I'm boooooooored.

(Details! Cervix 1 cm and 25% effaced. About to have second round of misoprostal inserted. Having very few and infrequent contractions.)

Re: Anyone care to share their induction stories?

  • DD1 - Checked-in @7am (4cm), started Pitocin, broke water around noon, got epi, finally ready to push at 11:45pm and she was born at 12:29am the next day.

DD2 - Checked-in @7am (5cm), started Pitocin, broke water around noon, got epi that didn't have a chance to take effect because I went from 5cm to 10cm in 40 minutes.  She was born a contraction and a half later.

Both great experiences (though the first was a bit long :-)), healed well, babies did great.

    Good Luck!

I was induced at ten days overdue, on a Monday (they started with a foley bulb because I was too progressed for misoprostal? I believe that's right...). Supposedly had contractions through the night Monday and on, but I didn't feel any until Tuesday late afternoon. They got intense REALLY fast (Thanks, Pitocin), and I had an epidural. I wasn't progressing at all and they weren't sure why, but kept hoping I'd keep dilating (spoiler alert: I didn't).

By the wee hours of Wednesday they were concerned about why I was still at 5-6cm with such intense contractions. Midwife called a doc in, who felt around and said the baby's head wasn't descending at all. Told me I could keep laboring but the longer I waited, the more likely it was that I'd have to have subsequent c-sections for future pregnancies.

At that point I was soooo tired and my back hurt pretty badly from the epi, so I said I was okay with a c-section. That happened midmorning on Wednesday, so about 36 hours after the whole process started. After that it all went really fast, they got baby out safely and all was well. His head was gigantic and my midwife assured me there was no way it would've ever fit through my pelvis.

My recovery was quick and easy and I'm really lucky that I was able to have the interventions I did. The process was long and obviously there were times when I was in a lot of pain, but overall it all worked out and I don't regret anything. :)

    Good luck!

  • The bad: I went in on a Friday afternoon to be induced and ds wasn't born until Sunday morning via csection.

The good-he was 10lbs and looked like a bobble head doll. He didn't fit in any newborn sized hats. That woulda hurt my nether regions. :P
Best wishes for a speedy delivery!

  • I was technically augmented with both children as my water breaks when I'm only 1.5 cm and like 50% effaced.

DS water broke 12:45 am. Pitocin started at 8 am. Broke the rest of my water around 11, contractions got very intense. Epi at 2:00, was 5 cm. At 2:30 pm, I was complete and DS was born 20 min later.

DD water broke 5:30 pm. Pitocin started at 7:00 pm. Epidural placed 10:30 pm and was 3.5 cm. I was complete around 11:35 and DD was born at 11:45 pm.

  • I was induced at 38w due to a fucked up umbilical cord :/ Overall it was OK. I was admitted Sunday evening, cervidil was placed. I have no clue if I was was dilated or effaced, they were never able to check BUT DS was super low so at least I had that...

Anyway, was checked the next am (Monday), nothing, so they replaced my cervidil and started pitocin a little later that am. I'm a special snowflake because my platelets were extremely low so they placed my catheter for the epidural that morning too but didn't actually hook it up. It hurt. Like a bitch.

Hung out in bed all day until about 3:30 when I started to have a little breakdown because nothing was happening and they wouldn't let me walk because I needed to be on the monitors. SOMEHOW my awesome evening nurse got the mobile monitor thing to work to around 4 so H and I started walking the floor. Contractions started, they were fine (just like heavy cramps) until 5 when I had to stop and lean on the nurses station and my water broke. Like everywhere, it was hilarious and I was just so happy that things were finally moving along.

Immediately after my water broke the contractions became awful, completely unbearable. It took the anesthesiologist almost an hour to come hook my epidural up which pissed me off - the catheter was already placed they seriously just had to connect it and push 'on'!!!!

Epi worked great, the turned off my pitocin sometime after that, had steady contractions for a few hours, started pushing at 9:30 and DS was born at 10:24.

So all in all it did was it was supposed to do; I just wish I would have been more adament about getting out of bed earlier!

    Good luck!!!!!!

You don't want to hear my induction story.  You're already there.  Just go with it :)

    Same here. Good luck!
  • I really liked my induction, it was so easy until about 9 cm when I stalled for a couple hours.  Then I pushed for 3.5 hours because DD's big head wouldn't come out.  So ended up with a c/section.  I progressed 1 cm per hour until I hit 9cm.  I didn't really have any pain until 7cm.  They gave me the epidural early when I didn't really feel the pain.  I'm wishing I had held off on it because that shit wore off and I felt everything for those 3.5 hours of pushing.

  • I was induced for pre-e, although it took a while I had a pretty easy L&D.  Given meds to soften my cervix for 24 hours, then started pitocin.  DD was born 7 hours later and I didn't feel much until the end with my epidural. good luck!
  • I was induced at 39w 1 day with DS1.  I had high BP and elevated uric acid.  I was on my way to PreE.  I was already 3cm and 80% when I got there. I  started with Pitocin about 6AM and I lasted till about 7 PM before getting an epidural.  At 11 AM the OB broke my water and it was PAINFUL.  At 5 PM I had been 7 cm and was mentally doing okay.  When the nurse (who was AWFUL) checked me at 6PM I was 5cm and DS1 had rotated posterior.

I lost it.  I begged for an epidural (which was the worst experience of my life) which was perfect until the back labor set in.  I could still feel everything and had lots of discomfort, but the searing pain was gone.  The worst part was I could feel the catheter.  Then back labor set in and i was in panic mode because I couldn't roll over, and it was hell.  The anesthesiologist came in and gave me a bolus which made me go completely number from my sternum down basically.  I couldn't move my toes much less roll over on my side to encourage DS1 to rotate.

The OB came in and gave me the c-section talk and I asked for a couple more hours since he was tolerating labor fine. At about 9 PM the OB checked me and asked if I felt like I had to push.  I said no and she was surprised because I was 10cm.  I was literally that numb from the epidural.  I could not feel the contractions.  They even turned off the epidural at that pointThey had an internal monitor on DS1 and I only knew to push from the ladies telling me when I was having a contraction. After his head was crowning the monitor fell off and they told me to push when I was feeling a contraction.  I literally was just guessing.  DS1 ended up getting stuck and having shoulder dystocia and needing some super pubic pressure from the nurses.  1 hr 35 minutes of pushing and DS1 was born.  At this point the epidural had completely worn off so I felt every one of the stitches I needed.

DS2 was born pain med free because of that epidural experience.

Good luck, hopefully things progress quickly!

  • I was tighter than Fort Knox 3x and had vaginal indictions all 3 times.  First try was 35 hours, but she came out.  My other two were quicker (14 hours & 11 hours).
  • I was induced with #2 because of GD too. It sucked. It was 34 hours from check in until he was born. I was worried about ds1 at home with mil more than anything. And all the blood pressure checks and fetal monitoring because of the GD drove me crazy. I just wanted to walk around! But the "nap" before he was born (he came at 4am) was fanfuckingtastic. The epidural combined with an ambian was incredible. Best sleep ever!

  • DS: 40W3D- pitocin at 7 am, water broken at 11:30 am, epidural at 12:30 PM, started pushing at 6:00 PM and DS was born at 7:02 PM

DD: 41W 1D- pitocin at 1:30 PM, water broken at 2:00 PM, epidural at 3:00 PM, started pushing at 4:30 PM and 3 pushes later DD arrived. DD's induction looks quick but it was agonizing because I was GBS+ and had been admitted at 6:45 am and started on antibiotics at 7:00 so it was 6 freaking hours before they started the actual induction

    You'll do great!!

  • Sorry, I did a post and run - how rude! We thought things were getting interesting shortly after I posted...and then they got boring again. :) Got my epidural, 4 cm, just started Pitocin. I'm going to go read through all your responses now. Thanks for typing them out, particularly for an unknown newbie!! Good or bad, it's nice to hear others' stories and see you all came out on the other end.

Induction 1) 36 hours of torture - epi didn't work so I was only numb to about an inch below the skin surface, no one believed me, so I felt EVERYTHING.. Needed enough medication to sedate a horse to finally get the pain under control in the end.  45 minutes of pushing and I was too tired out from having been up 48 hours with nothing to eat or really drink to really care..  I also popped my hip out so they had to put it back in place and had a lot of blood loss.  Took forever to fully recover...

Induction 2) Took the attitude of going with the flow -18 hours start to finish, started at night so I could sleep through the first (easy) part, took the attitude of "Drugs STAT!" (signed in asking for my epidural - and explaining I can give birth in a barn, but can only get an epi here!) left DH at home until I was ready for an epi (he's horrible for all things medical procedures - he nearly passed out during induction 1 multiple times)... Epi had to be done twice, but the second time I believe I heard the angel choir singing it was so lovely!  From there, once I got to 9.5cm, they let me push and 10 minutes later from a zero station, while feeling NOTHING down there, 9lb 1oz. DS was born, epi didn't fully wear off for another 9 hours, and recovery was a snap (I was driving 2 days after being discharged from the hospital)..

Good luck with your induction!  Hopefully by the time you're reading this LO is snuggling in your arms and making eye contact!

  • I was induced at 41w 3d. Got a Foley balloon put in on Thursday night, then went home to wait for a call the next day to come in. Call came around noon, went in, they took the balloon out and I was at 4cm.

Walked around for a while, got to about 5cm, then they broke my water to try to speed things up a little. Kept walking but not much was happening, so by about 6pm they said they wanted to start pitocin, and did I want the epidural first. I was like, yes, please!

Got the epidural and the pitocin started, then just laid there shifting sides until I was fully dilated and ready to push at about 2:30am. Pushed for an hour, DS was born with no complications at 3:29am.

  • My first was a induction at around 38 weeks.  I went into the Dr. for the NST, and he wasn't moving enough.  I wasn't dilated or having contractions.  They brought me in around midnight and used the cervadil on me.  Around 11 the next morning, my water broke and the contractions started.  They never had to use pitocin.  I was ready to push around 6, I think, but it took a while for me to get the hang of it, and he wasn't born until 8:30.  His cord was wrapped around his neck, but the Dr. didn't tell me until later.  I was so thankful for the NST and the induction.  He weighed about 8.5 lbs, so he would have been a really big boy if he had stayed in for two more weeks.
I hope everything goes well for you!!!

  • Good luck! I have had three successful inductions. The doctor broke my water with each around 9:30 am. I progressed really quickly after that. I had my first at 1 pm, and both girls were born around 11 am.

  • Congrats!  Louise is my middle name :)

  • Louise Kate joined us this morning at 2:53 AM! Pitocin started at midnight. OB broke water at 1:45. Started pushing at 2:30, out 20 minutes later. Little Lou is 7lbs 7 oz and we're just all so happy she's here! (And Momma is SO GLAD the gestational diabetes nonsense is over! I'm eagerly awaiting my peanut butter and jelly sandwich on white bread, with chips, from dining services!)

Nice and quick! You owe her a pony. :) congrats and love the classic name!

  • We went in on a Friday to get my BP checked by my OB and it was pretty high. He sent us to the hospital to get induced that late morning. We got there and I got started on Magnesium to make sure I didn't have seizures and pitocin to get contractions started. I got nausea that night but I didn't feel any contractions. Next morning, they broke my water and still things didn't progress the way they wanted. By late afternoon I was about the cry from the pain and exhaustion. I asked for an epidural and the doctor said it would be bad to get it before I was further along and it increased my risk of c-section. I told him I didn't care. The doctor came in to get me an epidural and at this point I was still only about a one or two. The epidural was enough to help my body relax and steadily throughout the night I dilated more and more. It didn't hurt at all and I was just playing Mario kart on my 3DS while I waited. 10pm came and it got close to pushing time. I think I pushed for 20 or 30 mins (I don't remember), but honestly it felt like 5. I kept having to switch back and forth from my side to my back because DD's heart rate would drop. She came out and had no problems :) She was 5lbs 9oz and such a tinsy little thing. I had a minor tear that got stitched up. I didn't even feel it though. DH said there was blood everywhere, but I never saw any. I had to stay until Tuesday morning cause my BPs were crazy.

Overall, I told DH that I would take 5 births like that to not have to be pregnant again. I hate hate hate being pregnant lol.
