What foods do you stock up on from Costco?

I'm making a huge trip to Costco in the beginning of October and trying to come up with a gameplan of what I'm buying so I don't end up spending the equivalent of our nation's budget defecit.

What are your go to easy foods? I'm not doing make ahead freezer meals.

Re: What foods do you stock up on from Costco?

  • Yes! I always forget how good the Costco premade dinner foods are.

  • The pot pie is the best! And it feeds my family of four twice so it's worth the price! I get so much at Costco... butter, coffee, meat and fish, the Rocky chicken tenders are good, I get bread and throw one loaf in the freezer. I get meatballs, pasta, and tomato sauce there and make spaghetti whenever I need a quick dinner. We also buy the frozen shrimp and can make shrimp scampi and pasta in about 15 minutes.

  • Is costco similar to Sam's?

I think so, but I've never been to Sam's club.

  • We get their cheese, fruits, sausage, chicken breasts, burritos, their pulled bbq pork and tortellini/ravioli's you can't go wrong.    We typically purchase things they have for samples on the weekends so what we buy for meals varies a bit.

  • I always stock up on meat and dry goods. Best place to get Graham crackers, goldfish, apple sauce pouches, I also tend to get their frozen lasagna for quick lazy night meals. I love having a chest freezer!

  • Anything non perishable or able to freeze.

For meat, we will divide it up into a serving size appropriate for our family before we freeze. I write on the freezer bag the type of meat and date, then "1 of 4" because our big freezer is in the basement and so we will bring up the next bag when we use one so that way I know where we stand on different types of meat for our next grocery trip.

I try to stay away from fruits and cheeses unless I have a game plan to eat them because that is usually where we end up wasting money.

  • They're ground beef is really good, too. It's a steal for 97% lean compared to other stores, and the 5 lb bag is divided. We usually get chicken breasts, condiments, sliced cheese, milk
  • Refried beans
    Tortillas (use one, freeze one)
    Bread (use one, freeze one)
    Tuna
    Chicken
    Vegetarian sausages
    Ground turkey
    Cheese
    Granola bars
    Trail mix
    Greek yogurt
    Frozen fruit
    Protein powder
    Eggs
    Coffee
    V8
A frozen premade item on sale, if anything looks good, and a couple fresh fruits and veggies. If plums look good, then we'll get a pack and just eat plums all week and don't waste any.

Pretty much frozen/freezable and dry staples like pp said. If it's something with a sooner use by date, we'll only buy it if it's something we use daily. DH and I both eat a yogurt daily, so it makes sense to buy in bulk. I make a lot of quiche too, so I know the eggs will be used.
Non-grocery items are razors, tampons, toothpaste, qtips, TP, paper towels, dish pods, clorox wipes, and DH's underwear ;)

It really depends on what works for your family and which items you'll actually use. It took a good 5yrs of over buying and wasting food for DH and I to come up with a solid list of go-to Costco items.

  • I like the Kirkland brand nuts, especially the pine nuts. Cheaper pine nuts than buying at any other grocery store. It's in bulk, so if you don't use pine nuts a lot, it's probably not worth it, but we tend to eat them a lot!I toast them an dsprinkle on salads, also top pastas, also make lots of basil pesto which is super easy and yummy.

  • OK, I didn't read this entire thread, but what *don't* I buy from Costco?  Love that place.  We buy:
    • Ground beef, tortillas, blocks of cheddar cheese, taco seasoning (pre-cook all the ground beef in advance and store to make burritos or taco salads)
    • Pot pies
    • Frozen strawberries, pomegranate juice, frozen berry blend, agave, Greek yogurt (smoothies)
    • Organic lemonade
    • Eggs!!!  Hugemongous trays for a really great price, and obviously lots to be made with eggs.
    • Pirate's Booty
    • Belgian waffles
    • Bacon.  Because bacon.

Yo, seriously.  Treat yo'self and get the Belgian waffles (they're Krusteaz brand instead of the Kirkland brand regular waffles).  They're pretty sweet all on their own and so damn good.  My daughter goes nuts for them and even my husband, who doesn't normally like breakfast foods like that, loves them.

  • I'm jealous that we don't have Costco here, or even a Sam's Club nearer than an hour from us. Also, after reading this thread, I'm starving.

I tried! There's just the two of us. We don't stock up on a lot of dry goods for some reason. I'm more likely to stock up on pasta, flour, baking supplies if we visit a Trader Joe's when we're out of town. We buy big, weird things at Sam's like our mattress, TV, entertainment center thingy, printer ink.

  • And now I think we need a freezer in the garage!  We just got our CostCo membership last weekend, and I've mentally spent about $4560780345 because of this thread!

    Yes. Same idea.
  • My local Costco has free range eggs, so we always get them, coffee cream, cheese (when on sale), frozen fruit, falafel and tomatoes.
