WWYD: Switching to toddler bed, door question

So tonight is the night we are trying out the toddler bed situation. I'm nervous but I know once he goes to sleep he'll be fine - it's just getting him to sleep! Question for you all, though. Since we've been at this house (since May) he's always slept in his crib with his door completely shut, but I keep ours open. It's been great because he won't wake me if he's just babbling or something in the middle of the night, but if he gets to a loud talking voice I'll hear him. We've been talking about what we will do now. Should we 1. Just keep his door closed? We do have a video monitor but I just envision him crying at his closed door scared or pounding on it for fun. Maybe not, though. 2. Have his door open but baby-gated so he can't get out but can call to us when he's really awake? Or 3. Block the stairs (our bedrooms are on the top floor) but leave both doors open so he can come in our room if he wants us? This is definitely what we would do when he is older, but I'm afraid he'd just keep running in. I'd also have to wait until we go to bed and he's asleep to open his door. We may have much earlier mornings this way, though.

Thanks for your input as usual! :)

Re: WWYD: Switching to toddler bed, door question

  • Thanks @katrine_05! Our bathroom is in our room and the other rooms all have closed doors, so the only place he could really go is in our room. Glad to hear you didn't have issues when she had the mattress on the floor with the door closed. Crossing my fingers!

  • DS doesn't get out of his bed (not even in the morning), so we leave his door just slightly ajar. We do have a gate at the too if the stairs though. I think I would be nervous if we did not block the stairs and left his door open.

  • Thanks ladies! I chose the door closed option - if we didn't have the video monitor I'd probably go open it, but for now it's closed. I put him to be at 7:30 and by 7:55 he was asleep. FX he sleeps all night!

  • We keep DS door closed and ours open so we can hear him. Sometimes he bangs on it but mostly he's fine. We crack it in the morning so he can come out when he gets up. Good luck!
