Reflux Check-In (9/16)

This is a weekly check-in for May mamas of LOs with reflux. Returning or new to the Check-In, we'd love to hear from you!

1 - How old is your LO and how long has s/he been treated for reflux?

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since last Check-In?

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share?

4 - Do you have any cute nicknames for your LO that you'd like to share?

Re: Reflux Check-In (9/16)

  • 1 - Emily will be 17 weeks on Thursday; she's been on meds since 8.5 weeks (first Zantac, now Prevacid compound).  We've also been seeing a chiropractor 2x weekly since 12.5 weeks.

2 - I feel like we're taking 2 steps back.  This past week she's had puke come out forcefully thru her nose 3-4 times on different days, and she's also coughing/gagging more on whatever puke is coming up with her burps.  DH and I met with her pediatrician today to ask if we should take her off the meds, since we're unsure if they're really working.  The pedi was wishy-washy to say the least -- I was very unimpressed at her advice.  We are going to try weaning her to taking the Prevacid every other day starting next week.

3 - This has nothing to do with reflux, but anyone have any teething tips out there for nighttime sleep??  DD has been drooling like a maniac which is exacerbating her reflux I think.  But separately, I think the teething pain is really getting to her.  I had to give her Tylenol 3 times last week bc she was crying hysterically at night and couldn't fall asleep.  But today when we met with the pedi she said we should only be using Tylenol for teething 3-4 times per MONTH.  Ugh.  I tried the Hyland's teething gel and the Orajel Naturals teething tabs, neither of which seemed to do anything...  Ugh, it's super early for teething I know, which I think means we are in for a looooooooong few months.  :(

4 - We have a bunch of names for her including:  Baby Poochers, Little Monster (bc she makes little monster grunts), and sillyhead.  :)

  • Sorry I meant to post on here the other day and forgot.

    1. Kailey will be 4 months tomorrow and she has been on Zantac since about 5 weeks I think. I feel like I answer this different every week... I cant remember when she started! We did 2 weeks of prevacid, which did nothing but made her spit up more. We have been back on Zantac for a week.

    2. DD is doing great this week! I have actually been weaning her off of Zantac. She started on it again at 1 ml 2x a day and is now at .7 ml 2x a day. I give her one dose for 2 day, then decrease it. She seems a lot happier and less spitting up! I really think cereal is helping her.

    3. No advice on teething :/ I have already given her 4 doses of motrin in 2 weeks. Speaking of motrin, when I went to meijer to get her motrin, I saw my ob who delivered her there shopping and she came over and helped me choose which medicine to give DD :) it was so nice of her! I had no idea what to get!

    4. We used to call her squeakers but dont anymore because she doesnt squeak all the time anymore. I call her kailey girl, cranky butt, baby girl, baby princess, and I think thats it!
  • @katsmewsings‌ im not sure how your prevacid is but can you just wean a little? If she seems upset put her right back to where she was.
  • Yeah I know what you mean! I was nervous too, still am. Does your lo get cereal? I know a lot of people choose to skip cereal, which is fine, but I decided to try it because I heard it helps a lot with reflux and I think it's helping alot. When I first started out, I made it very watery (formula). I accidentally made it thicker one day and decided to see how she did with it. She did great! Since i've been making it thicker, i've noticed a huge change in her!
  • @bridetobe9132013 - So glad to hear that the weaning process is going well and the cereal is helping your LO! How nice that your OB helped you at the store! I'm relatively certain if I saw any of my 4 OBs anywhere they would not even remember me! ;) Ahhh, such is the experience at a big practice. Although maybe the one that delivered DD might have a faint recollection of us after the traumatic delivery we had.

@katsmewsings - I haven't started the weaning process either but pedi said we could start this coming week. I'm scared though! We are on 1ml Prevacid per day, which pedi advised to do every other day for 2 weeks. I also call my DD baby and pulled out the classic "nobody puts baby in a corner" line the other day. ;)
