TTC After a Loss

Returning to this group..

I found out I had my 2nd miscarriage today. It was our 9wk3day u/s and we found out the heart stopped 8wk3day after seeing a healthy heartbeat the previous few u/s. We were so optomistic because we had passed the last m/c milestone of 6wks and the doctor said our chance had gone down to 2% after the 8wk mark. I am so defeated and scared that I will never have a baby. It is so hard and I can't stop crying.I have my 2nd D&C tomorrow and they are going to do genetic testing and think our next step is IVF.

Re: Returning to this group..

  • Sending So many Hugs your way!! If you haven't been tested for MTHFR please consider having them test for it! Hope you get answers and can set up a new encouraging plan of action! You'll be in my thoughts and prayers!!

  • I'm so sorry for your losses and that you find yourself here again. I remember your intro from before. Did you ever get a second opinion regarding medicated cycles/IVF? If I recall correctly, you've only been TTC for about 8 months, right? I would ask for testing for both you and YH and a second opinion from an RE before moving to IVF. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself, and welcome back.

  • I am so very sorry for your losses, but you are welcome back. I would echo Bug's comments, but for two caveats. Primarily, if you are over 40, then such aggressive treatments can certainly be warranted for OE cycles. Secondly, I know how hard it is to want to charge forward and having a doctor willing to charge ahead aggressively, yet to receive cautionary advice like Bug's. I strongly recommend not reacting by Pliny back and defending the doctor. Instead, listen to collective wisdom that, by what you've told us, your doctor is acting far outside of normal procedure for repeat loss in a short time period. That warrants consideration at least, and certainly a second opinion from another RE. ETA: that should read "...not reacting by pulling back...", but I'm too impressed by the fact that my phone 'knows' who Pliney is, so I'm geeking out and leaving it.
@PetraStonegirl - I agree with your caveats but did want to clarify for OP and any lurkers out there that my strong opinion about what the OP's doctor is doing is based off of OP's intro from last month and her response to that intro. I'm not a doctor and, even if I was, I have not met OP and do not know her entire history. Giving any advice should be done with caution.

Per OP's intro, she got pregnant the first month trying. This does not imply an issue with ovulation or fertility. She had a mmc and D&C in April. This is the rough timeline I came up with based on OP's intro and she confirmed it was pretty close to dates:

April 1 (not actual date of D&C) - expected period April 30ish
May 10ish - June 8 (provera forced cycle)
    June 8 - July 7(failed IUI)
    July 7 - Aug 6 (failed IUI)

I have a serious issue with a doctor who decides less than a month after a D&C that there is an issue with ovulation, puts a person on provera and then immediately follows with a treatment cycle - and is already saying IVF is the next step. Remember, OP got pregnant the first cycle she tried. The doctor moved to "you don't ovulate" without giving her a real chance to ovulate. I question that and hope the OP does also.

I also don't know what fert drugs the doctor is giving OP but if they put her on clomid 6 to 8 weeks post D&C, after two clomid cycles I would be extremely concerned about the condition of the uterine lining.

OP, again, I am so sorry for your loss. Please realize my thoughts are coming out of a place of concern. Make sure to give yourself time to heal both emotionally and physically. Lots of (((hugs))).

  • I am so sorry to hear about your recurrent miscarriages. I too had a similar situation where we had a heartbeat and then a few weeks later it was no longer there. I agree with the others to get a second opinion. I also agree that you need to give your body time to heal from the D&C. Both times my cycles took almost 60 days to return but they did without medication.

We learned that my problem was that I do not release progesterone and because of this there is no implantation/less of heartbeat. It is a pretty simple test that can determine this. Many of tests that doctors can do are not invasive and actually insurance will cover some of them (even with crappy insurance like I have as a teacher.)

I would love to see you speak with another RE before starting a more expensive and invasive treatment such as IVF. There are many factors that it coudl be and that could be corrected relatively easily. I hope this helps and please PM me if I can help at all.

  • Thanks everyone for your support and feedback. Just want to add some info since some of you seem to think this is a hasty possible next step and maybe I didn't put enough of the facts in my posts as emotions have definitely been overwhelming me .. so this doctor during my second miscarriage is my second, actually 3rd opinion since I myself am extremely uneducated in fertility and reproduction. the issue isn't ovulation, or even the timing and I do get pregnant fairly easily, it is just that since I already had plenty of genetic tests, blood tests, progesterone tests, etc and I am only 30yrs old and they haven't found any reason for the recurrent miscarriages.  so they feel it is most likely a genetic problem with the embryo, so this is why they think IVF may be the best next solution so they can do the genetic testing on the embryo before implantation - IF- the tests on the D&C show genetic issues. If not they plan on more tests to see if it is my immune system. The goal of course is to not keep miscarrying. thanks!
