Tilted uterus....

Since I've had so much unusual bleeding and clots this month, my obgyn did a vaginal sonogram to check for cysts and fibroids. No visible fibroids, but she did say my uterus was tilted, and that my right ovary had fluid sitting in it from either ovulation or a ruptured cyst. My question is, do any of you have experience with having a tilted uterus and do you know if it causes issues TTC? She said that the modern thinking says that it shouldn't, but I've heard it both ways. I'm trying not to get nervous but it's a little worrisome...

Re: Tilted uterus....

  • Wow thanks ladies, that gives me some reassurance. :) I didn't realize how common it was.

  • Hi tilted ute sister. I have a retro-flexed uterus as well.  I also had a ruptured ovarian cyst when I was 24, it landed me in the ER. I periodically have painful cysts, but none others that have ruptured. Unrelated to uterus, however.

I had a son in Jan 2013, and got my pregnant my first cycle off BC. So while it is anecdotal, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Tangentially, I was told that I had a blighted ovum at 6 weeks (ultrasound) because it was impossible to visualize the pole. After crying for a week and contemplating misoprostol, I went in for a follow up ultrasound a week later. Baby was fine, he was just hidden. The OB apologized to me and told me it was likely because of my tilted uterus. I changed practices after that, but long story short - beware the early ultrasound with your tilted ute.

    GL!
  • I have a tilted uterus. I've had no problems in the past getting pregnant. The only thing I've had issues with was having natural births. I ended up having to get C Sections. ETA: My cervix is also very high in there and I also carried my babies very high.
I've never heard of this. Why did your OB say a natural birth would be difficult/out of the question for you? I hope you don't mind me asking. I'm just curious.  I had a natural birth with my first and had no complications.
  • Tilted ute here too. No issues getting pregnant or delivering vaginally. For some of my ultrasounds it made it tricky to get the right measurements but it wasnt a huge deal.

  • I have a tilted ute. No problems with TTC, pregnancy or childbirth. The only issue was that my RE couldn't see my uterus clearly during my HSG and tried a couple of times to maneuver it to get a pic. That hurt like holy hell. We were going to do a different imaging test so he could see it, but I never needed it.

  • Really sorry to hijack this thread, but I didn't want to make a whole new thread and this is semi related. The last time I got a pap, my doctor had a hard time reaching my cervix, she said that it was very high up. Does this mean ever mean anything in paticular or does it just have to do with the time of the month?

It was likely just due to where you were in your cycle at the time, but some women do have deeper vaginal canals than average (the average is 3.5-4 inches I want to say.) vaginas are like penises, they come in all shapes and sizes, it's just hard to see. Better to have a deeper vag than a shallow one IMO. (I know in talking about vag like it's a swimming pool, but don't know how else to describe it.) All vaginas elongate during sex and childbirth, and like a penis, when ttc, it's not about the size, it's about functionality. I would not worry about it.
  • My is titled, and I have two kids. The only issue I had was natural birth. I had to have a c/s with both of them.

  • Another tilted ute here. Mine is severely retroflexed. My RE (neither of them) thinks that it's related to our issues. My OB did mention that I may have issues delivering naturally, but there was no way to know until we got there. Right now the only issue from the tilt is that my RE has trouble placing the cath for my IUIs.

I was told the exact same thing for mine as well and that it would not effect TTC.

  • Tilted ute here. No problems with my first pregnancy.

  • I was told I have a tilted ute when I was about 21. I haven't heard that from anyone since though. I don't know if it corrects or if it was assumed that I knew? Either way, I had to be induced because I didn't dilate on my own and eventually had a c/s.

  • Thanks everyone. You guys made me feel a TON better.  :)

@kayway85 Thank you for that advice! I will definitely be aware when I have early ultrasounds. That sounds like one miserable week that you had, but so glad everything ended up being okay!

I was told it corrects itself but mine never did.

  • I have a Retroverted uterus as well. Mine causes pain during intercourse sometimes. Other than that I just have painful periods. My doctor said 20% of women have a titled uterus. I also have an ovarian cyst which is very painful with my uterus being Retroverted. Once again, my doctor said everything should be okay when we decide to start trying. However, I didn't know there can be issues delivering naturally. That is new news to me.

My OB said not to stress about the possible difficulty delivering. It's just one of those things that they have noticed in some women with more severe tilts. But she said there isn't enough positive correlation for them to say definitively that the tilt is the actual cause of trouble delivering.
