TTC After a Loss

This is probably a stupid question.

I'm hesitant to write this post because I feel like what I'm thinking right now is pretty stupid. So here it is: I had a d&c almost 4 weeks ago. Last week I thought I had gotten AF but after seeing my RE was told I was retaining tissue. I bled for 8 days straight. Late last week I started to get very nauseous and threw up a few times. I have no fever, no other signs of illness. I'm scheduled to have surgery on Thursday to have ovarian cysts removed and a hystoscopy to remove retained tissue. I'm just getting super paranoid that I'm having pregnancy symptoms. I know it's not possible to get pregnant while retaining some tissue, right? I can't POAS because it would be positive due to tissue. Would it be appropriate for me to request a hcg test before surgery? I'm assuming my doctor is going to think I'm crazy. Just to clarify, the nausea and vomiting have been constant since late last week. Thanks for bearing with me, I'm just so uneasy about all of this.

Re: This is probably a stupid question.

  • I'm having a little trouble following the timeline. How did they determine the retained tissue? Did you have an ultrasound  after the flow last week?

  • I am sorry you are going through this *hugs*. But the person you need to talk to is your doctor. I think it is unlikely that you would have gotten pregnant, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

  • I agree with @ashtog! I would assume that before they would go in and do surgery to remove retained tissue they would do a ultrasound to confirm how much tissue there is and where exactly they are doing the scraping. If not I would imagine to ease your mind they would do either HCG testing or the ultrasound! Sorry your going through all this!!

I don't know if you can get pregnant with retained tissue, but my RE specifically said no unprotected sex once he found my retained tissue. (I wasn't cleared yet anyhow b/c we were to wait two cycles.) He said if there was any chance I could be pregnant, he wouldn't do the hysteroscopy the following month to see if it passed with period. I was surprised he said this b/c I assumed I wouldn't ovulate with RT. I guess if you had unprotected sex around ovulation time, it's something to ask about. Also, I had a BFN on a hpt when I had retained tissue (I was curious the week before to see if my hcg had dropped). Best advice = Call your doctor... Best we can prob do here is speculate. Best wishes for Thursday.
  • Thank you everyone. I had an ultrasound last week after my flow was not what I considered normal. At that time, I was told there was a small piece of tissue that would either pass or would be removed when I went in for surgery. Thanks for the encouragement!

I believe it is not silly for you to request an HCG test. My RE gave me 2 HCG blood test and my HCG was stuck at 55. Then I had the u/s to confirm the retained tissue. In my case, I had enough retained tissue that it was blocking my tubes (they told me this after the hysterscopy D&C). I think it is possible to ovulate with a small amount of retained tissue, which means it is possible to become pregnant as well. You should voice all of your concerns with your doctor. I wanted to tell you that your concerns are not silly or stupid at all. Retained tissue is a serious concern. I would also suggest the doctor test the tissue they remove. I found out I had a partial Molar pregnancy from the retained tissue that was removed.

  • I saw my doctor thus morning. I haven't gotten the blood results back yet but she did do an ultrasound while I was there. There is still retained tissue. She thinks the vomiting and nausea could be hormone related (if so, I'll know once we get the blood results back) or could be a random virus. Given that I'm a teacher, random viruses happen often but this one is just odd because I don't feel sick other then when a wave of nausea hits. Anyway, I truly appreciate everyone's well wishes for the surgery!
  • Yes, I do realize that retaining tissue will cause me to have higher hcg levels thus causing pregnancy like symptoms. The thing that was odd is that I was fine for the first 3 weeks after the d&c then all the sudden hit by these symptoms. My hcg came back today at 130 which is down from 300 2 weeks ago. I'm glad I had it checked it just gave me a little piece of mind!
