UPDATED Not the day we had expected... T&Ps please

We went for our A/S this morning. Everything seemed to be going well. After the scan, the tech said the doctor would be right in and that he may or may not want to rescan.

Well, the doctor comes in, shakes our hands, asks how the pregnancy has been and then immediately starts scanning the heart. He is scanning for close to 5 minutes and then says I'm sure you're getting a little worries but I need to gather as much information as I can and then I will let you know what is going on. He tells us that the baby's heart seems to have some fluid on the left side, that the umbilical cord has 2 veins and 1 artery rather than the other way around, and that the arms and legs are measuring about 8 days behind. We were referred to a pediatric cardiologist and for a Materni21 blood test to check for 3 chromosomal anomolies trisomy 13, 18, and down syndrome.

We saw the pediatric cardiologist this afternoon and the heart is functioning perfectly, all 4 chambers are formed correctly, and the heart arythmias are as they should be. The left atrial muscle is larger than it should be and this is apparently very rare.

We go back for more anatomy measurements as well as a cardiac follow up in 2 weeks, we should also have the results of the blood work back by then.

I am so sorry you're going through this. I have been in your shoes and I know it's terrifying. Focus on the good news that you have - baby's heart is formed properly and functioning.

Take lots of notes at every doctor you see - you won't remember it all. Take one day at a time. You will get through it.

I ocassionally see pericardial effusion (fluid accumulation in the heart) on ultrasounds I get at work. Of the few effusions I have seen, I would say 3 of the 5 have resolved on their own and the babies haven't been born with any problems. The problem with the cord that you are talking about is somewhat common. Sometimes it is a problem, but more often it is not a problem. The arm measurements I'm not as sure about, and the constellation of the three together is also something I'm not as familiar with.

I know I'm not really giving you any solid answers, but hopefully the cord issue isn't a big deal (as it often is not) and hopefully the pericardial effusion also resolves on its own!

T&Ps! One of my nephews had a single vessel cord and he was born healthy and is doing great now at almost 9 years old. The main concern they had for him, and are still watching is his growth. Hope all goes well for you with your upcoming tests.
