Trouble TTC

Intro - new to this

Hi everyone!  - I read the Newbie Blog and I hope I'm doing this correctly... if not, please let me know.
My name is Nicole and my husband and I have been TTC since about May/June of this year (I know, not long), which is when I got off of BC. I have been on BC since high school (about 6 years). After I stopped taking BC, I didn't get my period for several weeks. After taking a few HPT and a few more weeks of no AF, I called my PCP and he scheduled me for a blood test. The results of my blood test was that I was not pregnant. I scheduled an appointment with my OB/GYN and she had me go for a vaginal ultrasound (this is now 3 months with no period). In the meantime, she had me take Provera, and I finally got my period! I was so relieved, I finally thought there was nothing to worry about. Well, my OB/GYN just called earlier today and told me that after review of my ultrasound, I have polycystic ovaries and that I will have problems TTC. Of course everything else she said after that, I didn't really hear. - My husband and I have had baby fever for a long time, and have just been waiting until we were a little more financially stable. I was just so overwhelmed. I called back to ask a few questions after I had calmed down, and she was with a patient, so I left a message.
This is basically consuming me and is all I can think about. I'm really concerned.
My OB/GYN said that after this current period is finished, we will see if I get my period on my own in a month, and if not, she will have me take Provera again for another 3 cycles, and take it from there. She also said that if I don't get my period on my own, we will have to try other medications and options at that time.
Has anyone else been in this situation? Any advice?
I appreciate any help. I really would like to become a part of this community and I've never done anything like this before (online discussions, etc.), so please bear with me. Thanks!

Re: Intro - new to this

  • Thank you so much, ladies. - This was all very helpful.
I should have mentioned.. my PCP had me go for bloodwork when I told him we were TTC. My OB/GYN is sending me a new bloodwork order (for everything she wants that my PCP didn't test for). It is a relief to hear that PCO does not necessarily mean PCOS. She didn't say PCOS when she called. Her exact words were "polycystic ovaries."
I did read about the excess hair, acne, weight gain etc., and I really don't have any of that. I mean I just get a pimple every now and then, no weird hair, and I would probably be considered a little overweight, but I've never been skinny, so I don't really feel like that's a factor.
For about the first month (before I realized AF was late), I was temping and keeping track of my BBT with an app called OvuView, but after I didn't get my period like normal, I kind of felt like there was no point until things kind of got back on track.
When she was talking about the other options, she did say she would have to refer me to another physician- maybe an RE was what she was referring to? Now that it is after business hours, I'm assuming she won't be calling back today. I have so many questions about what she said because, as I mentioned, I really didn't hear much of anything after trouble getting pregnant.
I keep telling myself that it can take a while to get pregnant and I should stay patient, but it is so tough when everyone around me is getting pregnant left and right (and not even trying).
  • Good luck. I can understand the frustration. We all can. Best wishes on the TTGP board!

  • Sounds like you're doing the right thing by temping and kickstarting your period with Provera if it's been too long. Normally, if about 3 cycles show by temps that you don't ovulate, that's the time to see an RE for a full workup. Since you're coming off BC, I don't know how many months don't "count" as it's common to have irregular cycles at first and should not be a worry for TTC, so maybe ask your doctor about that? But if the doctor determines that you have anovulation, you wouldn't want to get meds from the OBGYN only to find out there there were multiple factors involved, so an RE is the next step.

A diagnosis of anovulation would be infertility and then this board would be the perfect place to get support as you go through testing and treatment with an RE. But I hope you don't get to that point! :)

  • I'm so sorry! Blessing in disguise though, you are finding out pretty early on whats all going on with your body and thats a pretty great place to start. I would make a note book and start writing any questions you'll have for the next visit. It will help keep you from worrying if you feel like "I can't remember to ask all of this." or "Am i missing something?" And heck maybe your doc will have other questions you haven't thought of or have home work for you do to. Good luck on this journey!!
