Roseola - has anyone experienced this with their child?

Last Wednesday, we picked up my 17 month old from day care. We came home, changed her, she was fine for a little while, and then threw up all over the place, literally. That night she came down with a fever, it went up to 102.  The next day she was fine, playing and acting normal, but not eating as much as she usually does, but still drinking.  Her fever went down to 99, so i thought it was a 24 hour virus.  Well that night, her fever went up to 103.9.  I freaked out, called the doc, but they told me not to worry, as long as shes acting normal ,etc, there was no need to come to the pediatrician.  The next day again went back down, she was acting fine etc. That night, back up to 102.  I took her to the doctor the following day, and they told me she doesn't have any other symptoms, so it's possibly Roseola.  The next day her fever broke, and this morning she had a slight rash, and she's been sleeping mostly all day, and the past two days she is so irritable.  I've never seen anything like it.  Has anyone else experience this?  It's so hard to see her like this.

  • Yep. DD (now 8) had it right around 18 months old. Pretty much exactly your experience except she never vomited. The good news is the rash generally isn't bothersome and is a sign that she should be feeling better soon. Hang in there!
  • My oldest daughter had Roseola when she was maybe 13 or 14 months old. She had a super high fever that sent us to the emergency room - right at 105. That was scary. After her fever broke and the rash appeared she was very tired and kind of listless for a few days. It probably took a week for her to be back to normal. I guess Roseola is a pretty common illness in young children, but I had never heard of it until my daughter started daycare.

  • same thing with me, never heard of it until she got it.  Thank you all!  She's such a happy child, so seeing her so upset, is so hard.  Hopefully it will go away soon, and she'll be back to herself.
  • That's pretty much exactly what happened when DD had roseola.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Today she is so much better!  So i'm very happy :)
