Breastfeeding

lazy/sleepy baby not getting enough

So DS is a very sleepy eater. Regardless of how much I try to pester & stimulate him while nursing he's not taking enough to satisfy & when I finally pull him off after an hr+ of nursing he fusses & we supplement w/ some pumped breast milk. So at least I know we're meeting his needs now (as of last weight check pediatrician was being watchful of weight loss). Any suggestions for getting my little guy 2 take more while nursing so we don't have 2 supplement? So far I undress him, tickle feet & body and gently squeeze breast 2 try 2 give him milk in mouth 2 swallow/stimulate more sucking. Overnight he refuses 2 nurse altogether & we have 2 bottle feed & I pump 2 ensure my supply doesn't suffer.

Re: lazy/sleepy baby not getting enough

  • Try going longer stretches between feeds? How old is your little guy? He's definitely not nursing for an hr+! He's getting the most during the first 10-15 min and then comfort sucking is my guess. So pop him off after 15-20 min and see if he either wakes up a bit or sleeps for a while then try again.

  • I'm having the same problem.  It started when we were still in the hospital.  I asked for a nurse and or lactation consultant 4 TIMES!  He turned out to have high levels of billyrubin and needed to be put under the lights in the hospital for 24 hours.  His levels went down and then came back up and he almost needed to be readmitted.  They said he was jaundice bc he wasn't eating enough and he wasn't eating enough bc he was jaundice and that made him tired!!!!!!  I started pumping when he was 2 days old.  Now we bottle feed at night bc i can't get him to wake up and i try to bf all day, but I usually have to sneak one bottle in bc I get so full and have to pump and it always winds up happening right before he decides he's famished.  I've been using a pacifier to keep him from snacking so I know he'll get a better nursing session.  Also rubbing his collar bone pisses him off to no end.  Diaper changes in the middle of feedings and believe it or not, he's more awake w/o the boppy just nursing on my lap.  Good luck!!!!!
