Your daily dose of rage

https://gawker.com/django-unchained-actress-mistaken-for-prostitute-accos-1634555094

Danièle Watts, an African-American actress who played Coco in Django Unchained and appears as Martin Lawrence's daughter on FX's Partners, says she was handcuffed and detained on Thursday by police in Los Angeles who suspected she was a prostitute.

According to Watts, she was approached by two police officers after kissing her husband Brian James Lucas, who is white, in public. Watts was reportedly asked to show ID and, when she refused, she was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car. They let her go after finding out who she was.

  • They LAPD says there is "no record of the incident". What a joke. I hope she files a lawsuit.

  • WTAF?! They've never seen a bi-racial couple before? Were they in an area that prostitutes frequent? How was she dressed that they thought she was a prostitute? There's got to be more to the story.

(Not that any clothing she was wearing excuses this in any way or gives them just cause, just trying to make sense of it)

She was wearing shorts (not even short or tight shorts) and a white kind of ratty t shirt with writing on it (looked like Sharpie or paint). I saw pics in an article today.
Oh! I didn't open this link because I read about it early on FB.

It's ridiculous no matter what she was wearing but come on!

Well, that would make the accusation of prostitution more understandable. The whole thing is weird. She says she was out of the car, on the sidewalk, talking on her phone when the cops arrived.

    -----------------
And also why would they arrest her and not her h if it was sex in the car?

(*am not familiar with laws around this/prostitution so that's why I'm asking)

Yep, that was dumb. I'm just not up for the debate (not enough time, not at the level of rage that this type of post is meant to inspire) and should have kept my mouth shut.

No I think it was a good question. I was wondering myself, and would have just given my ID had I been in her place. But, again, I'm not American and am not familiar with the laws/rights there.

  • Can I play devil's advocate for a moment? There are white prostitutes as well, no? I'm sure location (know prostitute areas) has a lot to do with it as well.

    What? No. Point missed.
I thought what was being discussed is that white women are not generally suspected of being prostitutes but minority women are. No?

Yes. Of course there are white prostitutes. That's why it is super racist that this woman was suspected of being a prostitute for kissing her husband in a car. This would not have happened to a white woman in the
    same circumstance.
Ok that's what I thought. So I was making the point that since there are white prostitutes as well that couldn't this have happened because the area is frequented by prostitutes and not because she's black.

For example, my cousin (blonde white male) was picking up a football teammate in the projects for practice. A cop came up and started questioning him because he thought he was in the projects to buy drugs. When my cousin refused to show ID the cop pulled him out of the car and threw him on the hood of the car. He ended up letting him go but WTF?

In this case it was because he was parked outside of the projects. If he was outside of middle-upper class neighborhood that probably wouldn't have happened. So my response was could it be that it was because of location and not due to race? If it was an area frequented by prostitutes and a white girl was stratteling a man making out in a car that it could also be assumed she was a prostitute.

(I will say that it was likely due to race but like I said, playing devil's advocate and saying that maybe other circumstances could be factors).

What happened to your cousin and what happened to her are both illegal because location and race do not add up to probable cause or reasonable suspicion.
Seriously, this is the example you provide of police acting reasonably?

The fact that the cops concluded that the only reason for a white man to be in the project was drugs is..wait for it ... Racist.
Because I'm sure the cops never approached a black man sitting in a car outside the projects because they suspected they were there to buy drugs, right......

I'm not arguing that this particular incident was not race related, it probably was (and I believe it was). What I'm saying is that there can be other contributing circumstances as well.

Eta- also I never once said the cops were acting reasonably. Don't put words in my mouth
