Changing Table vs. Dresser Combo

So, we just refinished baby girl's room this week... (Our home has dated hardwood floors, paint colors & moulding, so we refinished hardwoods and stained darker, painted the room light grey & put up all new white moulding.... I am VERY excited!!) Back to my actual question... Baby girl's room is small... We had originally planned on having the crib, rocker and dresser in the room. We put the dresser in the room and it is too big! (We already had this dresser in our other spare bedroom, so it wasn't a purchase). We looked at smaller dressers and just don't like the quality of them. We are thinking of just purchasing the changing table, which matches the crib, and putting a clothing organizer into the closet. Hopefully, before baby is out of her crib we will either have found a quality dresser for her room or will just be able to utilize her closet as her "dresser"... Has anyone else had to do this due to a small bedroom... Or do you all have any other suggestions??

Re: Changing Table vs. Dresser Combo

  • We just put the changing pad on top of a small dresser. We will do that again with this one. I changed my DD on top of her dresser until she was 3.
  • Loading the player...
  • We used a dresser/changing table combo because we needed something and thought it would be useful. We loved it and changed her on it until she was potty trained. This baby's room is going to be really small so I have thought about getting something smaller. I would just purchase the changing table if it works better in the space because for me a changing table is a must.
  • We had he dresser/changing table combo for E which I really liked and actually prefer. That being said with this one we aren't moving him into his room for many months (it's on a different floor) so we got just a changing table but the topper can be removed so it will become his book shelf. I got baskets for his clothes and bigger sizes will go in the dresser that's already in the room.
  • We have a built in dresser in the wall so we will b getting a changer.. I'm a FTM so I knew a lot of ppl say they don't use it but I feel like I might so that's what we're doing..
  • We had a crib, glider, and a dresser in DD's tiny 1st room. We just added a foam changing pad on top of the dresser, and used a waterproof changing pad elsewhere in the house (floor, bed, couch).

Can you rearrange the room so that the dresser will fit? Otherwise as PPs have suggested, either a smaller dresser or a change table that can be used as shelving later on would work fine.

  • In our old house we didn't have room for a regular dresser either. I used a cheap tall and skinny dresser and put it inside her closet. Then I had a changing table in her room. I used the changing table a lot (but I also cloth diaper)

It worked really well and we are just now (at 2.5) outgrowing that set up.

  • I prefer the dresser with changing pad on top. I have a changing table, and hate it. It's old, I had it for ds2, 8 years ago. It worked fine then, but doesn't suit our needs/wants now.
    I'll probably sell it.

With that said, I never even used the changing table. I changed my baby on the floor. Couch, bed ect. It's just more convenient for me.

  • Another vote for changing pad on top of the dresser.

  • Have you looked at ikea for a dresser? They have several sizes of solid wood dressers. We have a couple of them and I love them. Ours are the Hemnes line

We never used a dresser in DD's room. We had the changing table with some baskets underneath for blankets, towels etc.. and then used a closet organizer. However, I think I'm one of the few that used the change table every day, every diaper change from the day she was born until she was out of diapers at 2.5.

  • We didn't end up finding a matching changing table and the dresser was a low bench style so we ended up changing our oldest where ever we were with just a changing pad under her. With my second, I realized how much easier it was to just have a small stash of diapers and wipes in each room so I didn't have to leave my toddler unsupervised. Neither of my kids liked changing tables anyway when we tried to use them at friends' houses.
  • DD's room is very small. She has a toddler bed, a book shelf, a glider for me, and a small dresser. When she was a baby I got a changing pad and put it on top of the dresser. I also put some shelves on the wall above it to store creams, diapers, wipes, etc. It worked really well!

  • I prefer the dresser as a changing table, but if you absolutely can't fit it and don't want to buy a new one (and don't have to spend the same amount to get a changing table anyway), I don't see a problem.

I have a friend who has twins and they have a small bedroom.  They don't have a dresser - just the two cribs, a rocker, and a changing table.  They have a very organized closet with shelving in there.

There's some ideas on putting a dresser INTO the closet as a changing table, if it's a wide enough closet, like this:

Or skipping the dresser, buying a closet system that has drawers, acts as a changing table, and can grow with the child (this is my personal favorite):

  • I had a taller dresser for each of my boys for their clothes. They fit inside a small closet. I actually used a desk that my dad made in high school as the change table. I could store diapers and wipes and cream in the drawers and put a change pad on top. I velcrod a skirt around the section you would sit at and put a laundry basket underneath. I usually washed the baby clothes seperately. It worked well
