What do you think of Heidi?

I'm seriously considering Heidi if this one is a girl. Am I crazy?
It doesn't really go great with our DD & DS's names (Serena & Levi) and its a bit foreign sounding I guess.. On behind the name it says it is of Swedish & German decent which is kind of cool because my maiden name is very swedish and my husband's LN is German. I just like the sound of it and that its short and sweet and has a little pep to it!
What do you think??

Re: What do you think of Heidi?

  • I really like Heidi.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • I don't like it.

  • I love the name Heidi. My hubby doesn't but I truly do. My only concern is my family is a bit "country" and I can't stand the way they pronounce it. I grew up with a girl named Heidi and everyone in my family pronounced it very southern/country. Not sure if I can make the phonetics come across properly via typing, but they always made it sound like "Hi-dee" rather than Heidi/hye-di.... Sorry, I know that doesn't help. But I know the subtle difference in accents and pronunciation, which isn't something you can really correct people about, would drive me bananas. Hopefully wouldn't be a problem for you. I think it's a beautiful name!
  • Nms - but it's a fine name. I think it goes well with Levi and doesn't sound bad with Serena.

  • I LOVE Heidi. It was in our top 2 if baby was a girl!

  • I think that it is a nice name and goes well with the siblings. I usually don't like siblings names to end with the same ending but since the 'i' at the end of Heidi makes a different sound than the 'i' at the end of Levi, I don't think it is a big deal.

I definitely don't understand your phonetics. I'm not country at all, but I pronounce it more like "hi-dee" (rhymes with "tidy"). Are you saying it should be pronounced hye-di as in rhymes with "tie dye"??

Anyway, OP, it's not a name I would have personally chosen, but I like it.

ETA: In other languages it is pronounced "Hay-dee", but in English, it is definitely "Hi-dee".

No,no,no not at all... Still rhymes with "tidy".. But have you ever met anybody from Appalachia? The way the word "tidy" is pronounced there is MUCH different than how I personally would pronounce it. And the way about half of my family would pronounce it sounds like that, and it would drive me bananas! And you can't correct an accent because it's not like the person is pronouncing it "wrong", it's just their accent and way of saying it, so it's something I would just have to deal with and would drive me crazy. For the most part I don't mind southern or mountain accents, I think they are rather pretty and charming, it's really just the name Heidi that I've realized I couldn't use because of it. Here is a YouTube demo of the Appalachian accent. Granted, we aren't from Appalachia by any means, it's just the "I" sound that my family does, otherwise they don't sound Appalachian at all. However about a minute or so into this video she demonstrates the "I" sound using the word "tiny". Imagine it as Heidi instead. Lol. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Do you mean like rhyming with tidy instead of tighty?

I like Heidi. (Rhymes with tidy)

  • My SIL is from Appalachia and I think I get what @cakergirl‌ is saying. I think some people would pronounce it with a very strong emphasis on the first syllable, but it still rhymes with tidy. Not sure if that helps at all.

    OP, I like the name.
  • Love it. It doesn't clash with the sibling names at all
  • It's on our long list for a possible future girl, so I like it ;) I don't think it sounds bad with your sibset. It doesn't match, but it doesn't stick out either.

  • I like it a lot. I only know one person named Heidi, she is around my age and she is a lovely person. Good choice!
  • Nms but I don't dislike it. Go with it if you love it! :-)
  • I like it! It's soft, but spunky. Uncommon, but familiar and pronounceable.

@cakergirl, I'm from the south. Are you referring to the way most southerners pronounce a long I like "aaaaaa"? Haaaa-dee?

  • I like Heidi a lot.  It's pretty and unusual but not weird.  There won't be 100 of them in her school but she'll rarely (if ever) run into someone who can't pronounce it.

This exactly. And I think it sounds fine with your sibset.
  • @BananaLettuce‌ Yes!! Most of my family and friends would say "Heidi" properly but a few would say "Haa--di" instead. But again OP I do love the name, I certainly don't think it's strange or odd, it's just classic enough to be great but uncommon enough to be different, and goes well with your other names.
